How common/difficult is it to have a "Part-Time"(P-T) Internship during the academic year? Are they flexible with your classes?

Do any of the more popular internship sites offer the P-T option. I recently read a posting that said this was the "best" way to go because you're not dealing with all the "other" college students in the "World" competeing during the summer months?

My "S" is in Elliott and is interested in the State Dept/CIA/FBI Internships - but most of the student info there suggests they are full-time only.

Would appreciate any current student/parent info before the May 1st deadline! Access to internships in one the strongest reasons I'm allwing my "S" to consider GW.

Thanks

S has had a more difficult time finding internships than we were led to believe. Admittedly, some of it is him - he’s picky about where he wants to intern, he tries to do too much of it on his own, and he waits too long to start applying. Faculty & staff (at least in CCAS) do not recommend that freshman get internships, altho many students don’t listen to that recommendation. S has found that some sites prefer students with more experience & some have minimum # of hours per week. He has learned to arrange his class schedule so he has blocks of free time so he can intern, especially if the site is someplace he needs to take the Metro to get to.
Like I said, I’m sure my S is a big part of the reason he’s had difficulty, but I also think the economy has something to do with it. College grads who can’t find jobs may be more willing to intern than when the economy is better.

Actually, most internships are available for the Juniors and Seniors. However, some upper Sophs are lucky to find one, PT or FT.
I wouldn’t stress over trying to find an intership during the Freshman yr, too much going on already, plus professors don’t know you enough to write a recommendation for you.

Soph D had a 10 hour a week internship this semester in a government agency. She has a block of free time 2 days a week, so that worked out well. The student internships I have heard of are part-time and she could tell them when she could come. She also gets the best leads for internships by networking - someone in a club or organization worked somewhere and recommends it, or professors for certain classes send out information about available spots. State department jobs need to be applied for well ahead of time, I can’t remember specifics, but I believe the deadline for summer internship was sometime in the fall. (She didn’t get that one.)

mamabear - thanks - any recommendations for “clubs/organizations”. I’m sure there are many to choose from.
