Hi guys,
Right now, I have a part-time job job at a frozen yogurt shop - nothing special. My major extra-curricular activity is piano, which I've been playing since I was 5 (I'm a junior now). I want to get involved with a chamber orchestra, but if I want to do that then I need to quit my job. However, if I quit my job I will also start giving piano lessons a few times a week. I'm planning on doing a double major in college in music and biology. Should I quit my job and pursue these new activities instead?
Also, is it a plus for colleges to see that you play more than one instrument when applying as a hopeful music major? I play the xylophone in my school band in addition to piano, and I've been thinking about taking up flute. Would this in any way help my chances?
Thanks!

A part-time job is an extra-curricular activity, so don’t drop the job for the orchestra if you are doing that because you think a job isn’t equivalent to an EC. If you want to be in the orchestra because you want to have that experience (rather than just to accumulate another EC for the college application process) that is another thing entirely.

Questions to ask yourself include:
How much money are you making at the yogurt shop? How much are you managing to save for your college expenses?
Why will you have to quit that job if you join the orchestra? Could you ask your manager to schedule your work around the rehearsal and performance dates?
How much money can you make by giving piano lessons? If it really is that much money, why aren’t you doing that already instead of scooping yogurt?
