Me and my long time girlfreind are both engineering majors me in petroleum her in mechanical. I was thinking long term into the future and was curious at what opportunities could arise when any future children start getting into their teens for me to work part time. I love to work, but id care more about being with my children as there growing up. Is it possible as a petro to work hard for 15 years and become specilized in one aspect then go into a consulting kind of position where i could day rate my skills and be with my kids more? Are these jobs plenty? Would an MBA assist in gaining one of these positions? Can you describe what would be different between normal positions with an operator or service company? Which diciplines are best suited for this? For background I have a high GPA, am at a top school, will have worked two internships by graduation and have personality and drive to rise quickly within a company.

I’m sure it’s possible.

A couple questions though. You want to go part time, what about her? Are you both going to go part time while the kids are about to go to college? Also, kids will be in school during the day at that age, you could certainly find a 7-4 job and have plenty of time at home. Just thoughts.

As Chucktown said, alot of companies are flexible with hours. Someone could work 7-4 and the other could do 9-6 or something.

As far as consulting, I don’t think an MBA would help. Consultants get their gigs based off their techncial knowledge of a particular area, not because of an MBA.
