Participating in a large lecture hall

Am I the only one that is extremely hesitant/ reluctant to participate in a discussion when sitting amongst hundreds of your peers? I just ask this because in every lecture today, students were actively engaged and answering questions. For example, in the nature of politics lecture, other students initiated some interesting and complex discussions where I could never possibly ask such long questions without stammering/ getting nervous.

haha you were in that class too today? I really liked it even though im scared to speak up. Just do what you feel like doing man, no one is going to judge.

Yeah, I like the course too as I’m getting in to politics but I still don’t know nearly as much as some of the other students in that lecture. The one complaint I have is it’s very difficult to hear someone’s comment/ question and then the professor never reiterates what the question was. This leads to me getting lost since I’m not sure what he’s exactly responding to (and he likes to go off on tangents so it sucks when you don’t know what the original comment was). I suppose next lecture I’m going to sit in the front.

Before class begins, go up to the instructor, tell him that you can never hear the original question, and ask him to repeat it before he gives his answer. Lots of people will thank you.

I’m on the same boat as you. I have all of my classes in lecture halls. I find it difficult to participate in class and make friends especially since I have some social anxiety.

If you don’t like asking in front of a class, office hours are a good place to go.

Definitely go to office hours.
