Parties at Smith?

i was wondering how the social life is at smith, including interaction with the other schools. Does the majority of the student body at smith go to the other schools to party or are there enough on campus.

There's lots of campus parties, but most of the time the women far outnumber the guys. Most people do go to parties at the other colleges, although most of the quad parties at Smtih are pretty well attended.

Social life is a topic in our house regarding Smith, so we need to hear from Smith students about the reality of having one? I realize that different houses (areas?) have more activities than others i.e. quad vs. Green St., etc...and there appears to be many possible activities for a young woman to get involved in (at least according to the website). But let's hear it from the real students...what is the real social life at Smith like?

Playing sports, attending football/hockey/basketball games at UMASS, clubs of every sort, ice skating, musical groups, hiking trips, snow shoe trips, concerts, kyaking, trips to Boston and New York, plays, movies, debate team, comedy shows, ski trips, parties etc. etc. on and on. I don't know anyone who has enough time to do everything they would really like to do and there are always plenty of people to go places with or just hang out with in your house. Smith is very inclusive and they make a real effort at the beginning of the year to make sure that everyone becomes involved with house community.

So... social life is great. But.... if you're really asking about guys, there aren't too many around campus. You need to get off campus and make an effort -- it certainly isn't impossible, but much more difficult than on a co-ed campus of course.

The D told TheMom recently that there's so much more stuff to do than she's had the time to do. Some stuff she's wanted to do since she first arrived and still hasn't managed it.

Thanks Laureldj...and no, I'm not asking about guys. That subject heas been discussed ad-nauseum on these posts. I was just interested as to what Smithies do for fun and which activites they get involved in.

I know this is far from partying, but how often does the rec council show movies? Are they well attended?

Where do they show movies? Do they have their own theater like Amherst does?

They show a different movie every week (T,Th,Sat) in Wright Hall and there are a couple of places in town that show "art/indie films" there is multi-screen theatre on the PVTA busline at Hampshire Mall. That's where most people go to see the new "Hollywood" releases.

My D has enjoyed the following:

ice skating on Paradise Pond at Smith as well as on the rink at U Mass

theater performances on the Smith campus and others

biking to Amherst, stopping for donuts

This is what I suspect, too. :)

Some things they didn't tell you about:

roasting marshmellows over candles at Thursday night formal dinners.

coloring Easter eggs last Saturday -- the Jewish kids made the best ones, even though they'd never done it before.

watching an entire season of Alias in two days.

baking a "better than sex" cake for Valentine's Day

staying up all night to write a paper after watching a season of Alias in two days

"swimming" in a pond created in front of our house by flooding during a storm -- at 3:00 a.m. when it was about 40 degrees.

stealing carrots and apples from the dining hall to sneak to the horses

lining the hallway with a plastic tarp and using it as a slip n' slide (and I do mean in the traditional sense that one would use a slip n' slide).

trying to capture a squirrel to make into a pet, and failing completely

The MIT frat party -- the wildest thing that happened? Someone kissed the bartender on the cheek to get mardi gras beads.

Making a human pyramid at Friday tea

Really a wild bunch of people here. :-)

"- numerous experiences which have not been mentioned to me, I am sure!"

Of course you mean the wild, hot steamy, exciting....ice cream at Herrell's? ;)

Wow...you Smithies sure know how to live it up. ;) Don't get me wrong, I'm sure glad my D picked Smith, that's for sure!
