So I'm just wondering what types of people at cornell go to parties? Are they generally jocks and preppy kids that you'd expect to be involved in the Greek scene or are there also a lot of down-to-earth kids who're also wiling to drink and dance?

Also, what % of engineering kids do you think party during their freshmen yr?

I’m almost certain that every Cornellian has gone out to a party at least once. Especially freshmen year it’s the thing to do and a way to bond with your hallmates even if you don’t drink. I know some engineers who party 24/7 and keep up their GPAs and engineers who party and don’t do great.

This is really hard to tell since I am not much of a partier, but my conservative estimate would be 35%? I’m sure other people would have more realistic figures.

My impression is that a lot of party goers are “jocks and preppy kids”. But there are also partiers who do not fall into this category. Some of my nerdier (and by that I mean, not “jocks and preppy kids”) friends and I usually share a handle on Friday nights over some board games, but we occasionally do go out to parties for the free alcohol. But no, I really do not think I fit in with most party goers.

have ever gone to a party? probably in the 90% range give or take 10. Party a lot, hard to pin down an exact percentage but a similar percentage as from other colleges probably a little less but not a ton.

Most of the engineers I know (75%) like to go to parties, and about 30% of them are frequent/hard partiers.

You will find other things to do to occupy your time as well, though. Engineers just tend to be good at finding other things to occupy their time.

thnx for the response guys. The impression I get (especially from cornell engineers from my school) is that cornell’s are more chill and more frequent partygoers. Am I right in assuming this or is the % of engineers partying like this in other top engineering schools as well.

MIT is a pretty party- hardy school: they were even sued by the parents of a partier who died from excessive binge drinking during a frat party.

Everything depends on what kind of engineer and person you are. I have great friends who get by with a 3.2 and party four nights a week as chemical engineers and smoke blunts nightly. I also know those engineers that lock themselves in their room and never let up to have a good time and still get a 3.2. It is all about how hard you work, how long you work, and how smart you are. Cornell is full of smart people and as a result there is always going to be that kid with a 4.2 who is a full-fledged alcoholic who gets a lot of girls and has a good time. Everything and everyone is here you just have to find him/her. In general I would say that about a third othe engineers party and maybe a fifth of those are “cool” enough to actually party with.

How is the party scene if you choose not to join a frat? I am undecided on whether I want to join one as of now. I normally party a good amount, but it’s almost always mostly with people I know (and yes, hook-ups are mostly amongst my extended group of friends, like 25-30 or so). So what would be best for me to do?

trust me, frats aren’t the only ones that hold parties. i hate going to most frats - except for the ones where i’m actually friends with some of the brothers. it’ll definitely be what you first go to, initially as a freshman, but once you start making friends, you’ll start finding out about house parties, etc.

alright thnx for the responses guys
I’m just wondering like what types of people show up at frat parties
are they the desperate losers from highschool or all jocks. Is there a variety of people of all kinds showing up?
