can anyone emphasize on the party life at bowdoin? cause i know that every college/university has a party life reputation. wat are parties at bowdoin like? Do people get alcohol poisoning often? Any peer pressure to drink? thanx for ur responses.

I think that compared to other schools, Bowdoin has a fairly strong drinking culture. Bowdoin is pretty isolated, so the main social activity on the weekend is drinking. That being said, I don't know the statistics on alcohol poisonings--I personally don't (think) I know anyone who's had to be hospitalized and I have only heard of one or two cases of it, but I'm sure there are more. I don't think it's a huge thing though. As far as peer pressure is concerned, if you don't live in a chem-free dorm, I think you'll find that most of your floormates do drink, and will drink pretty much every weekend. I guess that can be pretty isolating if those people are your friends and you don't want to go out with them because they'll be drinking and you won't be. The solution, of course, would be to choose to live in a chem-free dorm. And parties can be anything, really. As a freshman you'll probably end up going to a lot of social house parties--themed campus wide parties. And random people/houses throw parties all the time and depending on who you know, you'll end up going to a whole bunch of stuff like that too. I mean, a party's a party--alcohol and drunk people.

This issue is of concern. My son is a junior interested in Bowdoin and does not drink. Has little interest. Would appreciate hearing from current students who don't drink or do drugs. Is there a substance free dorm? Are there fraternities on campus? We are planning to visit Bowdoin in late August before school is in session so we will not get a full picture of campus life.

Pmyen, some answers to questions.

There is a sub-free freshman dorm as well as sub-free upperclass housing (several options)

Bowdoin has no frats - it's a pretty central tenet of our social scene... http://www.bowdoin.edu/reslife/colhouse/index.shtml

I would suggest looking through a viewbook or browsing the bowdoin website before the visit, it will help to get to know the school.

Oliver,
Thank you. Both my son and I will check out the sites.

i visited a friend at bowdoin and had an awesome time. one night i went to a social house party and it was awesome. there was no pressure to drink and there was a mix of drinkers/non-drinkers but everyone was having a good time. on the next night there were more parties but the dance concert was going on and it was packed. i got the impression that there are drinkers/partiers/non-drinkers/non-partiers and they seem to get along and both know how to have a good time and work hard.
