party school reputation?

D is strongly considering LFC. She's a serious student and is looking for a school that isn't a party school. She wants to have fun, but due to health issues, can't drink alcohol. She thinks that LFC might be the right school for her, but after reading some earliers posts, it seems as though LFC has a rep as a party school. Can anyone shed some light on this?

don't think so. i'm going too, and my friend there told me that they do party because there's little social life. i don't think that ppl who don't drink won't be bothered. and there are only 1800 students........how serious can a party be anyway?

Thanks, lilyhoho. Do you mind if I ask what attracted you to LFC? D is really having a hard time deciding where to go.

i'm an international student, and i consider money as big issue. lfc is very generous to me , so i decided to go. i like its academic reputation, and i think the lack of social life is not so important. i'd rather make life-time friends instead of hanging out everyday.
and lfc is connected to chicago, which is impressive.
there's a program of dual degrees in engineering. i think that's pretty cool too.
my friends go to better schools because they can afford it, but i believe that with my effort i can achieve sth as well.

Yes, traditionally that has been the LFC reputation. But they certainly respect and support students with a academic focus. I will confess that I did party, but I was also a College Scholar, President of Student Government, Editor of the Yearbook, Editor of the Newspaper. For me LFC was a great place. If your daughter is motivated, she can really stand out. She can go wherever and be whatever she wants. Yes she should work hard, but make friends and have a balanced life.

You will even find two prizes at LFC named after me and two scholarships that I endowed. Oh, and I was a scholarship student too.

I have to agree with most everything Winterset says and his approach to collegiate life. Having visited many LAC's and Ivies in the Northeast, I was surprised by the heavy partying, to the extent of consuming alcohol until one passes out. It's a lie to say the overindulgence of alcohol is nonexistant at LFC, for that's what appears to be a major social activity. That said, I can count on one hand how many occasions I drank a conservative amount of beer this past year with fingers on that same hand remaining. Not everyone at LFC parties and most that do are there to do a lot more than drink. Personally, I have a lot of plans for '08-'09, none of which include alcohol.

Motivated, hard working students are noticed for their efforts at LFC in ways well beyond the scholarship money used to attract perspective students in the first place. I know kids who've transferred and are transferring, but no one I met from the class of '08 had misgivings after having attended LFC.

Thanks for the responses. She's excited for LFC, and we think she's going to do really well there.
