Partying

Are there alternatives to the partying culture at Kenyon? If so, are they only for the weird kids?

I'm asking because I am in love with Kenyon, but partying and drinking go against my values, and I will probably not attend if there isn't any real alternatives to it.

Hey! Partying and drinking go against my values as well  I was told that though the partying scene is definitely present at Kenyon, there’s a lot of other stuff to do as well! There are talks, concerts, shows. There are also some “sober” events throughout the year like certain parties and dances.

It’s definitely nice to hear from someone else who isn’t interested in the party scene! Hopefully there will be more people like us! (I was accepted to Kenyon RD and I really love it too)

Im not much of a partier either, and was just accepted rd! I love Kenyon! There are probably some alternative activities. I would keep in mind that the partying aspect probably exists at many other schools you are looking at (although I am not applying to any “party” schools, there is definitely a similar amount of partying for most of the liberal arts schools on my list). Best of luck deciding! maybe i’ll see you guys this fall :)

My S was not a partier, and he loves kenyon. I will say that picking wellness housing is the way to go. We worried he may seem like a goody goody but that was not an issue at all., He was able to find his people that way and is really happy. There were a lot of athletes on wellness too. Loves it there, and accepts that other kids drinking is part of college culture.

My son isn’t either. Although he doesn’t judge others for it, it’s not something he’s into. He may very well be going there so it’s good to know about choosing the wellness housing. Thanks!

I think there are lots of alternatives to drinking and drug use at Kenyon. We just came back from visiting my nephew who is a freshman. My high school junior stayed over night with him in the dorms. During my son’s stay, my nephew had class, rugby practice, a first read-through for a play he is doing and then he and my son got together with friends and had an epic game of Settlers of Catan.

Our tour guide said that he had spent the previous night enjoying a bottle of wine with friends and talking about Shakespeare. That seems in keeping with the Kenyon style. Adult responsibilities come with adult privileges and vice versa. The students are smart, focused, thoughtful and responsible. They have way better things to do than spend their time drunk or high. You could probably find beer pong on a Friday night, but you will also be able to find plenty of folks doing more interesting things.
