I've visited Kenyon a few times, and I loved its atmosphere. I'm applying there this fall, but before I apply, I just wanted to know: how many of the students spend time at parties/how big is the party scene at Kenyon? I'm not one for drinking/partying, and I want to know if it will be possible to find other students like me without feeling ostracized there. I'm sure not all students are into partying there, but I just wanted to know what current students and alums have seen in their experiences.

My teacher graduated from Kenyon a few years ago and he said that there was a lot of drinking. But yeah I’d like to know more about the party scene there too.

It’s been a few years since I graduated, but I can tell you that there is a real spectrum of social events. One of the nice things about going to school in a small community is that the school makes the effort to bring diverse events and programming to campus, rather than relying on the city to entertain their students.

First of all, I’d make a distinction between drinking and partying. Those two do not always go hand in hand. I enjoyed going to parties to hang out and dance with my friends (and maybe cute boys), sometimes there were fun themes to dress up for, etc. I did not drink in college and always had a blast out partying and never felt pressured to drink. In fact, my friends appreciated the fact that there was a DD in room, should we decided to go get late night food :)

That being said, big, more traditional parties aren’t for everyone, and that’s reflected at Kenyon. Often I’d attend small parties of our friends or maybe a club we were all involved in. Sometimes this involved alcohol, sometimes not. Sometimes it was a drinking game to a favorite nerdy movie with a pizza and sometimes it was board game night or a scavenger hunt.

Again, to reiterate my first paragraph, this doesn’t include the plethora of concerts, performances, lectures, and late night events (movie night in the pool!) hosted by the college.

Basically, like so much of Kenyon, the social experience is what you make of it. What do you want it to be? Make it so. Kenyon’s student body has diverse interests and you’re bound to find people who share your idea of fun. And, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised by new ideas of fun.

my brother told me that drinking is big, but the drug scene is weak. you can easily get bud but anyone who is used to dropping x or acid any time that they want is in for a rude awakening.

Most people say college is what you make of it … and that’s completely true. The mainstream party scene at Kenyon consists of the big ‘all campus’ parties that fraternities (and other organizations) throw each weekend.

The typical incoming freshman at Kenyon flocks to south campus on the first few weekends like giant sheep herds in an effort to find these parties (they are pretty easy to spot).

Other types of smaller closed parties are thrown by random assortment of people that can involve alcohol (or not). You usually have to know someone to be invited… but that’s not hard if you get to know many types of people (athletes, acapella groups, … many other organizations on campus).

I would recommend, at any school you end up attending, to spend your first few weeks seeking out the types of people you want to hang out with. There are definitely many non-alcohol related events on any given weekend on Kenyon (and plenty of people attend these events). Also, if you enjoy partying, but not drinking, that too is possible. I know a couple (not many though) people who are really social and enjoy partying but they completely abstain from drinking; everyone respects that choice.
