@bester1, you have a stubborn one there! I would tell her the nonnegotiable budget and disengage. This is starting to sound like a battle of wills, so you may need to try a new tactic. Good luck!
Kind of reminds me of the boy in high school that has a dozen girls that think he is cute, nice, smart and funny…he can only see the Home Coming Queen yet he can’t have her as she is dating the football team captain…my dauhter wants what she can not have…lol
PASSHE enrollment declining…

@kidzncatz How is the college search/application process going lately? I am curious for those CC posters who are applying in and around PA (or from PA).
@Portercat My daughter has applied to West Chester and Temple. She wants to wait until she hears from West Chester before applying anywhere else. The other PASSHE schools should be “likelies” for her, and she will apply to one or more of them if rejected by West Chester.
Although crazy things happen at all schools…Temple makes me kind of nervous. Tough, tough location and these recent events…

Yeah, I was wondering how that story would affect applicants. It was all over the local news here in Philly.
@bester1, Frostburg State University in Western Maryland has a women’s swim team. Around 5000 undergraduates and 700+ graduate student. Small town right on the edge of campus, pretty mountain setting…maybe the medium size would offset the small town feel? It would be a safety/match school for her. Don’t know about the OOS costs but maybe she could be recruited and get merit aid? I know a female athlete from Virginia going there as a recruit…assuming she’s there because of a good financial deal.
Frostburg also has some reciprocation tuition deal with surrounding counties in PA and WV. (or at least they did/heard they did).
Good luck! We have also applied to Millersville, York College of PA and West Chester, and will be applying to some schools in MD and VA. Visiting West Chester open house day this weekend.
Even with these types of events and the surrounding area,Temple continues to grow in popularity with kids form suburban Philadelphia, and not necessarily just commuters. Many will live in the city.
@m0minmd - Thank you for the Frostburg suggestion. What is the Town like? We qualify for the discounted tuition as we are only 110 miles away.
It’s a small, but nice town. There are larger towns (Cumberland) not far with shopping, entertainment, and dining options also not far (Lavale). There is a Greek presence of sorts (I don’t know much about it). It’s not far from Deep Creek and there are lots of outdoorsy and winter sports things to do. You should visit to see if it’s a fit.
ETA: Named after the guy who settled there (Frost), not the fact that it experiences winter sooner/longer than other parts of Maryland.
Yes, its a cute mountain “village.” A little run down (in the sense that it’s not gentrified) but it has character and personality, with Victorian era buildings and store-fronts. There are several mom and pop restaurants, pizza places, an old diner, a nice independent book store, an old movie theatre a good public library in the little downtown. The college website has a photo of the downtown on its homepage.
Does she know what she wants to study? That’s great about the discounted tuition for you…
Here is a cool map indicating Frostburg’s tuition agreements. We are out of range, but it is cool nonetheless:

Great map!!!
Check it out…PA is # 3!!!
Now that the strike is settled, I anticipate that this will get worse. There are a bunch of professors on a facebook board who are telling me that they are not related (tuition and professor salaries), and they think that the state will chip in to rescue the system. I don’t see any evidence that tuition will moderate or come down, especially with declining enrollments at many of these schools. Sad.
The tuition would stabilize if the funding would go back to previous years. Remember…not too long ago funding was 80% from the state and is now at 20% from the state. The residents of the Commonwealth clearly do not understand what has taken place (dismantling of Public Higher Education) during the past few decades.
