The drive isn’t horrible…and cheaper then changing flights and you have ten days…

i find the drive between southern and northern cal relaxing. always have…

Seahorserock, I don’t understand; the Sacramento office won’t expedite what? BCert or passport? San Francisco is the N Cal place for expedited passports. is the 877 number for passports in LA? Thanks!

“Have you called them to see if they can get it again quickly and overnight it to you? Since they sent it out, I should think they could do this pronto.”

D emailed them That the BC did not arrive, and they said call USPS. Their website says at least two week turn around, but look what happened the first time…

Shrinkrap-
The plan I proposed is drastic but it is the only way to get the documents in hand before your family trip.
Your d and s can make it an epic road trip.
She will need to download and print out the application form for her birth certificate on the link.
She will need paper copy of her plane ticket with her name on it, every individual named.
Paper copy of your hotel reservation.
Paper copies of any excursions you have booked.
Any documentation of Jamaica to bolster her rush request.
Her driver’s license, social security card, school ID, any additional photo ID.
I would go to the SF Passport website and see the availability of appointments now.
You need to make a preemptive appointment, to insure a timely slot.
IMHO-
Waiting is foolish.
You can’t throw enough money at this problem at this late date.
Your son and d should hit the road Sunday and be waiting Monday morning in queue.
I’ll do more research…
D should get her passport photos taken and have at the ready, she can get them done at Walgreens, CVS ( you can get a 2 buck coupon off the 7.99 cost by printing a coupon at CVSphoto,.com)
Root of the problem: She needs an official raised seal California birth certificate.
You can only get one in person in Los Angeles at this late date.

Wow, thanks. So one vote for NOT waiting to talk to the passport folks?

Maybe I don’t understand the facts, but it seems to me all this driving may be unnecessary! Birth certificate request was already processed and approved. They’ve already been told of mail failure. Ask if they will reissue ASAP without personal appearance. Perhaps you can overnight to the LA County vital records office both their fee for reissuing the birth cert. and a prepaid overnight delivery envelope they can use to send the birth cert. directly to the passport office. And as for the passport office, didn’t you already pay for expedited service, and aren’t they still holding the file pending receipt of the birth cert.? Call to see what the problem with your secondary evidence is, whether it can be cured any easier than just getting the birth cert., confirm they will continue to process on an expedited basis to support your trip and be sure you get a contact name and number for follow up, as well as a clear understanding of their processing timetable so your daughter can do whatever it takes to make this happen.

Good luck!

Shrinkrap-
Read this link.
May contradict the address in post #16 where your daughter needs to go to get her certified birth certificate.
[Birth, Death & Marriage Records](http://www.lavote.net/recorder/BDM_Records.cfm)
You and she will have to download and read carefully these links to direct her where to go in LA to get her document.
Norwalk office only open on 3rd Thursday of the month.

^ thanks again!

“Ask if they will reissue ASAP without personal appearance. Perhaps you can overnight to the LA County vital records office both their fee for reissuing the birth cert. and a prepaid overnight delivery envelope they can use to send the birth cert. directly to the passport office”

That would be AWESOME and hopefully we can speak to a real person and make our case and they will treat it as in person, but online orders say two weeks minimum.

From what I read in order to get certified birth certificate in less than three weeks you must personally appear in the county of the birth. Period. Go to the state and county website. If you want to take another chance to et birth cerificte in the mail, by all means, go for it.

The Sacramento passport office does not expedite, only Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Please go to the websites

Batlo is exactly right. if you request overnight I really doubt they will do anything, as their website says not a chance.

They will not send to passport office, are you kidding, that will not happen.

If you want to trust the system that already failed, go for it, me in would already be on the road…

Shrinkrap-
The post #27 link lists additional branches in LA she can get her certified birth certificate for 21 bucks a copy.
May as well get 2 copies, one for her, the other for you to keep, makes the trip south more worthwhile.
To clarify:
All the Jamaica ticket paperwork is for the San Francisco Passport Agency, to prove the urgency and issuance of the passport to her that day.
She will need to bring her passport size photos with her and pay for expedited services above the usual cost of a first time passport.
Hopefully, she will get the passport later that day or will have to drive back from Sacmo the next day to pick it up in person.

Yay, convinced seahorserock, now need to convince shrinkrap to get her kids on the road so this vacay/fiery plane crash can happen for the whole family.

This thread should be stickied as a cautionary tale of woe.

Oh I already knew she needs to go in person, having had people deal with this before. I find it amusing someone would think bc would be mailed to passport office!!

Trip is in ten days, which means next Tuesday, which really means this needs to be done by Friday… To give Monday as cushion day, so birth cert needs to be in hand Thursday or Friday depending on where passport office appointment is, la or sf…

Most post offices will do the paperwork for passports and make sure all is complete

The daughter will have to go to a regional passport office(SF or LA) to get the passport in hand the same day/within 24 hours.
Branch post offices(Sacmo) do the paperwork and then send it to the regional office, which is not quick enough for Shrinkwrap’s trip in 6 business days.

Best case scenario-
The birth certificate should be in hand the latest by Tuesday. Drive home to norcal.
Go to premade online morning appointment at the San Francisco Passport Agency on Wednesday.
Present documents and have passport by Wednesday afternoon or at the latest pick it up on Thursday.

Okay, i get it; thanks again. Trip is late May 31.

One more piece of info, that makes me hope delaying the trip until Monday AM is worth the once day difference. Husband pointed out that the letter we got from passport agency says "the evidence of US citizenship or nationality you submitted is not acceptable for passport purposes for the following reasons;

The full names of your parent(s) are not listed on your birth certificate."

The copy is exactly what they would get in LA. I would like to clarify what this means. So you guys are thinking a phone call is worthless? I made the appointment in San Francisco.

Another one with Batlio and seahorserock. Get on the road and do this is person ASAP. Nothing is going to happen via mail. The BC is the hold-up and until you have the certified document with a raised seal in hand, you are at a standstill. No phone call will change anything. Please don’t waste any more time. If you think your D and S can handle it, send them off tomorrow; otherwise go with them.

Note to all parents: check your kids’ BC’s and always have an extra copy. Make sure it is the authentic one.

One more thing…I have been over the websites ad nauseum, for months, although I am still learning things, thank you all. Also in the letter it mentions a “certified certificate” has “embossed, impressed, or multicolored seal” and mine had the multicolored seal. Makes me wonder if the one we had was certified AFTER all. Cant imagine why they would have given me something different when she was born. Different county, but the one we got when son was born was certified, albeit with the raised seal.

Anybody know if LA certifies with a colored rather than raised seal? Looking it up…yes, I know, I should just put the kids on the road…

I cant possibly go myself; I have bunches of patients I would have to cancel and reschedule and I can’t do that from home, nor can I get into the office over the weekend.

Seriously, thanks folks.

If she’s going to go down to LA…why not get birth certificate AND Passport in LA?

LA seems to have an emergency office…and it appears you can even get an appointment if trip is less than 2 weeks away

[Schedule an Appointment at the Los Angeles Passport Agency](<a href=“U.S. Passports”>U.S. Passports)

They should be familiar with “official” LA birth certificates…so may have less of a problem than in other places. Then, she doesn’t have to wait a day or two until her return to SF.

Unfortunately, on more than one occasion I had to get a same-day passport in NYC. Both times required a fairly long wait…but…I did get the passport the same day.

Costs for first time passport for 16 years and older:
$110 Application fee
$25 Execution fee
$60 Expedited fee
Family trip to Jamaica-priceless…
Do not write a check for tally total, may need to write expedite fee separately on another check or pay the $60 in cash.
Confusing, yes.

2boys-Shrinkrap’s family lives in Sacramento.
SF is not that far away to drive for a day trip into the City to go to the regional passport agency.
If the kids have a place to stay in LA then yes, LA Passport Agency is closer but take in consideration that the LA Passport Agency much busier since it serves a bigger population.

Prayers that it all works out for you Shrink!

I suggested LA Passport agency because it appears they need another “original” birth certificate…which needs to come from LA. If they don’t, then I agree there would be no reason to go to the LA passport office.

Looks like this…forged one…

Says “certified abstract of birth”. Wasn’t married when she was born. Wonder if the problem is my maiden name…
