Birth certificate/passport?

<p>Can somebody tell me whether the original birth certificate is required, or do they accept a (xerox) copy? The last time I got it from California, it took so much time and I do not want to let the original go, if possible.</p>

<p>Or do they accept the copy of US passport?</p>
