I'm currently getting paper checks, but since I'm going to college and will have other things to worry about and of course, will want my money earlier along with some other factors, I've decided to go with one of the other options. A paycard or direct deposit. A paycard is like a debit card (I think we use Visa), and the money is simply deposited onto that and then you can do as you please. That's nice because then I can just use what I earn as spending money and what I already have as savings/for school. Direct deposit on the other hand allows me to have my money split between my checking and savings accounts I already have and I don't have to do a thing. I already have a debit card, but in order to not be charged when I withdrew money I would have to change banks because the one I use is local.

So I'm not sure which to get. I see the benefits of both.

Noooo don’t do the paycard. My current job pays via Visa paycard and it’s the worst.

1. No matter what ATM you use, you have to pay your card’s fee (mine is $1.50) PLUS the bank’s normal fee. Usually that means paying three dollars to use an ATM.

2. My paycard has fees for just using it at stores. It costs 50 cents to use it as a debit card. I didn’t know that until I used it at Target and looked at my report later.

What I do now is just go to my bank and ask for a cash advance on my paycard, then I put the money in my debit account. It’s a hassle, and I wish I had done direct deposit when I had the chance.

Thanks for the info Abby. Best Buy definitely didn’t tell us any of this and didn’t really give us a whole lot of info on the paycard. They did say that it was in part to encourage direct deposit though.

Paycards are a complete and total scam. Seriously. They’re kinda intended for the type who don’t even have a bank account to direct deposit into; the same kind of people who use those sketchy “checks cashed here” places. But since checking accounts are free, there’s no reason not have one.

Use direct deposit. It helps your relationship with your bank too, it will make them look more favorably at you later than somebody who doesn’t use direct deposit. Banks make money just by you storing their money there, and they like it when they know that a certain account will get a deposit every 2 weeks (or w/e your pay is).

Direct Deposit is a beautiful thing. When I used to work I could always count on my check being deposited around 2am Thursday every other week. It removes a step of the process and gets your money to your quicker without fees and hassle.
