PBS' will broadcast taped interviews with Swarthmore students tonight (Wed)

on the NewsHour - according to a person I just spoke with at Swarthmores News and Info office. Not the Willetts pieces but interviews at other venues on campus. I hope this is accurate.

Yes it is! I just watched it. It started at about 45 minutes past the hour. There were about 8 kids (Democrats, Republicans, and at least one Independent) is a rather formal setting.

Is there any way to link to it online? I missed it.
Thanks

I think that PBS must have taped that segment in one of Parrish Parlors -- the two formal rooms on either side of the front entrance to Parrish. I know the rooms have big formal fireplaces and one of them has a grand piano. I can't think of anywhere else that could have been.

I thought it was a fantastic piece of PR for Swarthmore. Well spoken, politically interested college kids. BTW, I think there was at least one College Confidential Forums alum in the group!

collegialmom: I have to believe that Swarthmore will post a link to the video on their website. Also, don't many PBS stations re-run the Jim Lehrer New Hour late at night? You might check your local listings.

7 minutes to go. Should be good. Ah, that was interesting. I agree, looks like Parrish.

I think it's fantastic when college students are politically engaged. I know that Swarthmore students make a big push to get Swatties registered in the local district. The Swat district was a bellweather district in this election, with both the Santorum Senate race and the Curt Weldon Congressional race.

It was actually taped in Bond, where many of the campus religious groups hold services.

We were wrong. According to the Swat website, the student interviews were conducted in Bond Memorial Hall -- it's the corner building connecting the Lodges.

Makes sense. They could have parked the satellite truck in the visitors parking lot and set up for the Willets lounge and Bond, which form a small quad.

There are photos and link to downloadable audio of the segment on the Swat webpage.

Thanks, the audio sounded great. Please let me know if anyone sees a video version posted.

They found three Republicans! ;) I could post the names of all the students involved since I was writing furiously as the names were put up on the screen. Anyone interested? I did tape it to show it to S when he comes home.

On this website, it says if you missed the show, you can watch the video here. I did not watch it to verify that the Swarthmore segment is on it, but if it is actually a video of the Newshour show, it should be on there.

Thank you so much! One of my son's friends was on it. They were all so articulate.

I just saw it, on a late-night replay of News Hour. Very impressive and articulate- nothing said that I'd call exactly a novel idea, but you can hardly expect that when each student only got a few sentences included. As far as insight into the school goes, there's a great moment when the interviewer asks if there's any discussion of politics on campus. They all get these little smiles, and one girl starts talking about discussions of tax policy over dinner- something along the lines of "there's nothing we'd rather be talking about."

I'd take most of them over run-of-the-mill TV talking heads. I found it refreshing that there wasn't much rote parroting of talk-radio bullet points.

Mom of one of those articulate Swatties checking in to kvell--I know that so many of these kids worked so hard on local campaigns, and they should be very, very proud. Thanks for the direct video link, interesteddad; grandmas across America will bless you.

Of course, now that I've outed myself I can never post on CC again (and no, his name isn't Stacey ;=)

NJPitcher: You are tall for a pitcher! (Well maybe not quite R. Johnson's height.) You look a lot like my son, and I actually thought you were him, although he totally is NOT political, so I would have been very surprised if he were there that evening. I did call to ask if that was him

staceysmom: whoever your son is, he was very impressive, they all were, and Swarthmore should be very proud of its students. Now I have to ask my son about those dinner conversations, I don't think he is into tax policy(!)

And thank you again to whomever provided links to the interview sections, much appreciated.

staceysmom,
Mazel tov! Although his name isn't "Stacey," this does narrow it down to one in three. I wonder if he's the one who lives on my S's floor?
