PE--what's it like??

I am pretty sure i am going to enter mendoza, but i am very interested in health and weightlifting... is PE a knowledge class or is it a total blow-off do a little running and a lot of nothing class like it is at my high school... do u get a grade that goes on your GPA?

are there a lot of health electives i can take? i noticed there are none open to freshmen in FYS...

First, you need to know the PE is mandatory, above and beyond your 5 class course load both semesters freshman year. It's not like an elective you take for credit - in fact, you don't recieve credit at all. But you still have to take it.

PE is broken up into three sections per semester, for a total of 6 sections over the course of your freshman year. You need to take Contemporary Topics, which is more or less high school health, for 2 consecutive sections of the 6. In other words, you take it 1 and 2, 3 and 4, or 5 and 6, but you can't take it 1 and 3, 2 and 4, etc. Just go to class, you'll pass.

As far as your other sections, they have lots of different options. I highly, HIGHLY recommend taking anything with Coach O'Sullivan. He's on of the most amazing, inspirational person I've ever met, and he was nothing but the coach for a non-credit freshman PE class. He teaches Golf and some other things.

As far as registering, you'll find out about it at Frosh-O. They give you information and you register in CoMo during the first week. Get on line early so you get your picks. Do some research beforehand, and focus primarily on location, or you'll end up getting screwed. If you live on South Quad, pick things at the Rock, or you'll be hiking 15 minutes across campus 3 times a week on top of regular classes.

As far as the individual classes, it seems like the teachers are all pretty relaxed - at least the ones I had. TAKE COACH O'SULLIVAN, but Josh Skube and Darrin Thomas are pretty cool too. The classes definitely teach you what to do, but by no means are the intensive. I improved my volleyball game, but it's not like I'll be playing professionally anytime soon. You get three cuts a semester. In the fall, ration them for when it gets cold, in the spring, ration them for when it's nice at the end of the year.

Sorry for the long rambling response. In fact, you should probably ignore most of it. Just listen to what they tell you at Frosh-O, you'll figure it out.

two things-

josh skube is the man

i am so glad ill be a sophomore next year if only for the lack of PE...it definitely adds a burden to the courseload

lol... it doesn't go on ur gpa right? u just need to pass it...?

"Pass" means attendance. And no, there is absolutely no effect on GPA.

I second the recommendation of taking golf with Coach O'Sullivan. You'll regret it if you don't get to experience him at some point in your ND career. I also recommend taking team handball and ultimate frisbee.

He also does Raquetball.

"And do you know why Tootsie Roll is the best chocolate? Because they're always FRESH! Aye yai yai."

"High Five! Thank God you're alive!"
