Peabody/JHU Dual Degree

Friend of my D applied to Peabody/JHU hoping to enter the dual degree program, cello.

Accepted to Peabody, but waitlisted at JHU. He has other good options, but Peabody is first choice. Strong pressure from parents, and somewhat from himself, to attend a school where he can get another non-music degree. He is pretty sad.

Can people with experience share any info?

Are Peabody kids in the regular waitlist with all the other JHU hopefuls? Anyone get off the list?

Do Peabody kids take many classes at JHU? Anyone know of students starting in at Peabody and applying for dual degree sophomore year? How many kids actually get through that dual degree program? it looks pretty intense. They seem to allow a non-music minor at Peabody. Is that easy to do?

She would like to support him and I know people here have a wealth of knowledge. Thanks.

My daughter is probably going to Peabody this fall. Peabody is pretty flexible, and allows a second degree, a minor, and even a triple degree! A friend of my daughter’s tried just that: double performance major, plus a JHU degree. ( He dropped the second music performance degree after one year.) I know that Peabody kids take at least one JHU class each semester. I don’t know about the JHU waitlist. Seems to me that a music student, who can take any courses at JHU, could prove themselves by doing well in those courses and get admitted.

DD is a sophomore at Peabody. It is easy to take classes at JHU but the trick is fitting them in your schedule. Students are required to take 1 humanities per semester but not necessarily at JHU. Peabody offers their own humanities classes at the conservatory.

You may want to ask about the wait list on the JHU forum.

The JHU waitlist has nothing to do with Peabody so, yes, they are all in it together. I suggest she keeps closely in touch with JHU. asks her place on the waitlist etc, send any new grades, accomplishments etc etc. I know someone who started at Peabody and then petitioned to join the double degree and is now doing both. Also there are people doing double degrees within Peabody ie cello and theory, cello and musicology, cello and music ed, cello and recording arts - if any of these are of interest that would be easy.

Hey folks - I graduated last year with a BA/MA from JHU and BM from Peabs - if anyone’s got questions on the programme, feel free to shoot me a message! x
