<p>I'm inquiring to be a volunteer for the Peace Corps. can anyone tell me more about it? Their experiences?</p>
<p>I actually have been thinking about that too, while I have not any experience some things I've seen by looking at the safety data the Peace Corps publishes:</p>
<ol>
<li><p>You will be in a POSSIBLY dangerous enviorment, no doubt about that. This is because you will be sent to poor areas as thats where they need you, and in poor areas theres always a 'threat' of incidence.</p></li>
<li><p>The death rates in peace corps that they published were generally low, but every year they lose 1 or 2 people. Crime however, is higher, and you have a small but considerable chance (20%) of getting mugged.</p></li>

<p>My husband was a Peace Corps volunteer in the early 1980s. He served 4 years in Papua New Guinea (near Australia). He loved it. </p>
<p>Off the top of my head....safety concerns:</p>
<p>-in the capital city, it was unsafe to go out at night because of muggings,
-once we were walking home and were approached by a wild pack of dogs,
-his Peace Corps friend had a heart ailment and they had to fly him out for medical attention,
-my husband caught maleria while he was there</p>

<p>Thanks so much! That will really help! Right now, I'm researching everything I can about the Peace Corps. The year after college I plan to volunteer for a year and then go to med school (my initial goal).</p>

<p>Yay another peace corps buddy! I am seriously considering the peace corps after college. Its a great incentive if you have loans. <p>Did you know that if you were in the CIA, you can't join the Peace Corps but if you are in the Peace Corps, you have to wait a certain amount of time before joining the CIA? yeah, its weird.</p>
