I want to have my best friend of 6 years, and boyfriend of 2 1/2, write my peer recommendation. We have been dating for 2 and 1/2 years, but we have been best friends for 6, since 7th grade. But I'm wondering--do you think he should specify that he's my boyfriend on the recommendation? It asks how long and in what context he has known the applicant (me :) ), and we're unsure if it is smarter to simply write "best friends since 7th grade" or to include the fact that we've been exclusively dating for 2 and 1/2 years. What do you think? He is not applying to Dartmouth himself, if that matters.

I think you would be better off just having him say that you have been friends since the 7th grade. If he mentions that he is your boyfriend, perhaps they will think there is some bias in the recommendation.

on the other hand, that's probably what most people will do...and by stating that he is your boyfriend and not making the rec. outrageously biased your application could stand out...just a thought

It's up to you, but either way it probably won't make or break your application. The peer evaluation is biased by its very nature and I doubt the adcoms will put that much weight on it (unless it has some really, really incriminating info in it).
