Hope it's okay to post two questions this evening. If a student transfers colleges yet the FAFSA has not changed, would the Pell Grant, State grant, and Stafford loan amounts remain the same or do they possibly decrease because the student is transferring? Thanks for any guidance.

The Pell Grant and Stafford Loan amounts depend on the cost of attendance, so if you are transferring from a much cheaper to a more expensive school (or vice versa) the amounts would change. The effect on the state grant would depend on the individual state itself.

Thank you college_ruled. What if the situation is reversed – the transfer is from a less expensive school to a more expensive school and the Pell is already the maximum amount? Would it likely mean that it would remain the same?

No that’s wrong. The Pell and Stafford loans would remain the same assuming you were receiving the full amount of both.

I don’t know about state grants.

Since most state grants are tied, to tuition, if the state grant is more than the cost of tuition, it would cap at tuition.

For example: NYS TAP (state aid) caps out at $4,995

Tuition at 4 year SUNY is $5750
Tuition at 2 year SUNY is $3840

Student is a commuter student at both places:

If student was at 4 year school, s/he would receive the max of $4995 and pell would pick up the balance of tuition and fees. Any balance would be refunded to student

If the student were to transfer from a 4 year SUNY to a 2 year SUNY, the TAP would max out at $3840 (the cost of tuition at CC). Pell would cover fees and and any balance would be refunded to student.

If student was living on campus, balance from Pell and loans would be applied to fees, room and board.
