Penn 2017 ED Discussion Thread

All Penn interviews are performed by Alumni in the prospective student’s local area. While I guess it may be possible, I don’t think it’s likely Arabkid’s interviewer was from admissions.

Pretty sure Dec. 15th stands.

Anyone think the Interview has some level of pre-screening? Feel like they wouldn’t waste alumni’s time with someone who was significantly under qualified…

Penn has pointed out in several of its newspapers’ articles that there’s no pre-screening whatsoever when it comes to interview offers.

My interviewer said that they tried to get 100% of ED applicants an interview.

Sent from my HTC VLE_U using CC

I havent got an interview and I dont think I ever will. :frowning:
Wow, if penn really does prescreening for interviews, I guess I am already rejected/deferred. T.T

Penny- they don’t pre screen. No need to worry.

Yeah, I didn’t get one either. No worries.

Only around 30% of applicants are to Wharton - check article link posted by dfree in another thread

If 30% of the 4,780 applicants are for Wharton, then 1,434 applicants are for Wharton.

Wharton’s 2016 freshman class is 521 students (source: [Class Profile | Wharton Undergraduate](Student Profiles - Undergraduate)). Assuming 48% of Penn’s current freshman class is accepted ED, and assuming this rate is the same across all undergrad schools, then about 250 applicants were accepted ED.

So then Wharton ED acceptance rate is about 17%.

But! Because the 30% figure was from 2008 (hello financial crisis) I’m expecting it has ticked up to about 35%, or 1,673 applicants. Still assuming 48% of Penn’s freshman class is accepted ED, and that Wharton has no plans on increasing the size of its freshman class, the Wharton ED acceptance rate would be about 15%.

^But that 15% includes alumni children, recruited athletes, and other “hooks”, no? I wonder what the % is for unhooked applicants.

Just contacted for an alumni interview… Honestly very surprised since I submitted my app October 10th and hadn’t heard anything until now! Very excited! Don’t give up hope if you submitted early and still not heard :)

Haha your interviewer was probably one of the few slackers who decided to put it off until the last moment - all interview reports are due by next Friday.
Best of luck on your interview!

Yes, but I’m willing to bet that the hooked applicants, who aren’t otherwise academically admissable, are discouraged from applying to Wharton.

@foxtails: yup, the 15% includes legacies and recruited athletes and all that.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure alumni interviews don’t indicate whether or not you’ll be accepted or rejected. Even if you never receive an interview, you could still be accepted so don’t worry.

Also, has any information been released about the percentage of applicants to each school? I can’t seem to find anything :(

^domino2017: Your statements are correct. Penn doesn’t screen applicants for interviews. It’s all about whether or not there are alumni available. And there hasn’t been anything released about the percentages of applicants to each school. The previous posters were using info from 2008.

psychedelia - good analysis. But I doubt if that 48% rate is the same across schools. For example, if they didn’t get many ED applicants for the nursing school, they wouldn’t want to fill 48% of the slots. They would defer some applicants and wait to see who apply in RD. On the other hand, Wharton ED’s are those very committed and very smart as well … so why wouldn’t they admit more than 48% of the slots!!

Keep the hope high, and enjoy the FB games!!

Yep you guys I’m positive. That’s what she told me. And my interview was the week after the hurricane. And she does work in the office of admissions. She said she would most likely be going over the RD apps this year though. Sooo dec 12

ED deadline was extended last year, but the decision date was December 9th…

Ahh! Dec 12th is a Wednesday…and it’s smack-dab in the middle of finals week for my school :(

OMG I just realized that if the date is the 12th, it’s before my Calc III final.
