@GrandPoobah
So you just meant a lot of legacy at your school vs. the entire applicant pool?

@GrandPoobah
Yes, a lot of my classmates’ parent(s) attended Penn.

To no one in particular: I marked that I was not first-generation, but now I just found out that I am… Did this hurt my chances?

well it didn’t help yeti12 since they’re looking for diversity…

@yeti12: where did you mark that you was not first-generation

@yeti12 probs should’ve known that beforehand. don’t worry about it now, I’m sure it’s not a dealbreaker for your application

You know, guys…no matter how many more URMs apply, Penn and the others will probably still be applying their soft quotas, right? Especially since these URM pools still need to catch up with the others in terms of stats? It doesn’t really affect your chances at all?

I mean, frankly speaking. As a URM, myself.

Right,

Penn’s not going to significantly change its demographic distribution just because the pool has changed.

Basically, more URMs applying means Penn has more choices than before to get close to their implied (by the past) target number of URM applicants. Depending on the stats of those URMs, this just means higher competitiveness within those demographics.

Kinda like how if the Asian pool improved even more so that 50% of applicants had perfect SAT scores, you still wouldn’t see their presence at UPenn rise much. The status quo is the norm when it comes to college admissions until a Dean comes in and says otherwise.

Sadly. :/

And they’ve always “wanted” diversity, guys. -_-

They’ve been increasing the Int’l pool slightly over the years though - I think 20-25% of Wharton are internationals.

^ 40% of whartonites are asian!

Oh, then what do I know?

Still, though. Since URM amounts at Penn are already artificially inflated, their increasing their applications won’t change your situation as much as it does URMs.

The world is flat

should I be perceiving “40% of Whartonites are Asian” as a positive sign O.O? (I’m Asian here…and deathblade up stairs is also Asian? and then we see a lot of Indians… Asians everywhere…)

It means there are more seats set aside for this game of musical chairs that you might successfully scramble into. So yea.

Ultimately, being a urm alone is not enough. You have to have some good stats, good recs, good essays relative to your peers and if you get rejected its not because of your urm or orm status because at the end of the day, you have to be a fit. Good luck to all.

Well, of course. There’s not a single URM admitted who hasn’t earned his/her spot.

Musical chairs is a fun game. Can also be cruel sometimes.

How many of you guys are doing the IB Diploma?

These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer students and the sunshine professors will, in this crucible, shrink from the service of his academy; but he that stands by it now, deserves the honor and respite of the University of Pennsylvania

Anybody know how many applicants Penn admitted last year in the ED round?
