I will be applying online. Is there an advantage to either the Penn app online or the Common App online? I was just using the common app, but does it show more interest if you specifically fill out the Penn app?

dont think it matters at all...pick whichever one you can write a better essay for.

Well, the Common App contains the Penn Supplement which has all of the essays asked by the Penn App. So you are writing two additional essaye with the common app.

wait so if you just do the penn specific application, you dont have to fill out the common app for penn/ dont have to do the 1-6 essay at all?

If you do the Penn app, you won't have to do the personal statement that's on the common app.
If you're lazy, do the Penn app, If you want the adcoms to read more about you, do the common app.

what that makes no sense? Why would a school prefer an application over the other.

These are the EXACT words from an admissions officer from Penn after I went for a visit and info session;

"We don't prefer one over the other. Because if we did, then we would just offer that one."

I hope that clarifies a bit :)

I am applying soon but I am planning to use the Penn app because I like having everything together and not sending in different parts to different places and getting confused (thats just me). I am also applying by paper because it is convenient for me and makes me concentrate more. I don't know why.

One of the purposes of the Common App is to provide convenience, do you agree? Your math teacher probably wouldn't have the time and patience to fill out all 12 apps of the colleges of your choice. I guess if it's Penn you truly desire, fill out their app because you have to answer more questions about Penn as opposed to the Common App which is used by like 300 colleges.

For example, you'll have to answer the question about which professor would you like to have and why (unless they change around the app questions) I don't really know what the Penn supplement asks for, but surely it can't be as specific as Penn's app.

actually the supplement is basically the form 1B of penn app, minus activities/awards/work exp, so it pretty much covers everything.

i honestly dont get why anyone would not do the penn application (obviously my opinion) ..... and im saying that not because they would prefer the penn app more then the common app because thats wrong... they really do not care which one you choose.... however, with the common app, as someone said, you have the option of writing an "option" essay (as well as the Penn specific one and the Common App statement), which basically means that you should write it. I mean, they even label it the "creative essay" .. and those optional questions to choose from have been passed down for years (217 pg, risk, and the other one i cant think right now) ....... Who wouldnt want to do that one? I guess I am being pessimistic here, but I also think that writing another essay might hurt you more than it helps - what if your first 2 essays were pristine?...and then you write the third one =/ ?
for me, sticking to the Penn App might be easier (even though my other 10 regular schools use the common app)

I've heard from a few guidance counselors that doing a school's app instead of the common shows interest, but I'm not sure how much it really helps (if at all)

Well, i just think this way: Why would you do Common app while theres another app for only that school (penn's app)? COmmon app is, obviously, for convenience for students. THe word "covenience", common app wouldn't make you look attractive to penn, would it? Colleges obviously look for your degree of interest in them. COmmon app is shared by 300 colleges like Minor6th said. This is only my opinion, but i find this question very straightforward. This being said, i think COmmon app is definately not suitable for Early Decision applications.

Disagreed. CommonApp has a Upenn supplement which is the SAME THING as the Penn App itself. Basically, you're doing the Penn App PLUS 2 MORE essays on the commonapp, in which the commonapp requires more work and the people know more about you.

Therefore, it doesn't matter. Commonapp might be even better if you want to find an excuse to flaunt your writing ability.
