Penn CIS

I am currently in Penn and am choosing between CIS and CBE. As it is going to get incredibly difficult to plan my courses (future ones, I got this semester pretty planned out), I was wondering if there's any current CIS grads or alums who could tell me what the CIS major is like, it's placement or reputation among employers or graduate schools and so on. I've gotten mixed response from students (ones who quote rankings, and others who quote the "brand name") who are not in Penn, so it would be very helpful if I could get information from students who know the major here.

Penn CIS is pretty highly regarded, especially if you take some of the NETS courses. [NETS - Networked & Social Systems - UPenn](http://www.nets.upenn.edu/)

If you haven’t already done so, check out the SEAS Career Plans Survey Reports for the graduating classes of the last 6 years, to get an idea of the employers and grad schools to which the various majors went right after graduation:

I haven’t taken any NETS courses, might try to next semester. I thought NETS is a major on its own to be honest, so never bothered checking! Though, may I ask what you mean by highly regarded? Sorry for asking much, but all I know about it is ranking and we all know that’s pretty worthless at truly describing anything.

45%r, I checked the survey, but the number of CIS majors there are pretty limited, so I assumed that to be not as accurate at truly describing the major.

^ If you review all 6 years of SEAS surveys (2007-2012), that should give you a pretty good indication of the types of employers and grad schools to which CIS majors tend to go.

You could also contact the CIS Department directly to perhaps get more comprehensive placement information. I wouldn’t be surprised if they maintain their own detailed lists of where their majors end up.

Yes, but only a handful out of the many students giving information each year didn’t feel like the most solid source of information. Though this is how I felt, I could be entirely wrong. But, calling the CIS department is a great idea, and I will do that! Thank you! :)
