thanks mandy. I got your e-mail. I didn't notice that the story was posted on the first page of the thread. :p

Nevada got a large increase which does not sound really good. But only 4 kids applied from my region and I was the only ED.

Well think about it this way...

Wharton usually receives the toughest applicants (highest SAT, high class rank), since the majority of the applicants are Asians. I've noticed that many Wharton applicants are Asian. However, if there was a major decrease in Asians, quite possibly the biggest decrease came from the pool of Wharton Applicants. I'm just speculating, though!

getcrunk i think that's some nice wishful thinking. i hope ur right.

Who knows. I would've though Wharton applicants would go up, what with admissions getting tougher, plus all these silly "Wharton University" movements.

But anyway, do you think this means that Penn's ED acceptance rate will go up?

eh, the way i see it is: most SEAS applicants to any SEAS school are asian, just because asians are engineers or doctors. penn has one of the top bioengineering programs, which draws a hella lot of asian applicants. so, if there was a decrease in asians, it almost certainly affected the SEAS applicant pool as well.

the article says that 19 states had a "major" increase. This makes no sense. This means that other states SHOULD have a major decrease since the number of applicants has dropped 2.5%. Lets not forget the 13% of internationals who also equate in the 4001 applicants.. I am not too sure of these stats.

i think the rate will remain the same or maybe push a lil toward 30%...however this is great news for all of us since it was probably expected that rates would keep plummetting down for this school as it has in the last 5 years. i mean we'll never again see the day of 40% but its great to know the rate probably wont decrease.

I don't think it says "major," just "record number." For states like Montana and Vermont, that could mean a jump from 10 ED applicants to 15.

rate can ONLY increase, it CANNOT stay the same. they fill a certain percentage of the calss via the ED pool, and that percentage is a constant. thus, with less ED applicants, the percentage has to go up to meet the quota :)

yea, id say 29-33% ED acceptance

Yeah, ridewitbd24, agreed.

I feel slightly uplifted...

my brother told me that he has access to the bloomberg terminal through the company that he works for thats where this article is from. its not posted online but statistics will be coming out this week in the dp.

i know this article seems a lil too good to be true (esp for asians!!) but im really starting to believe it. i mean the article seems professional enough and if this is a joke lets just say it is a really good one however cruel.

30% ED acceptance would be nice. That's almost 1 in 3. There are 3 kids applying to Penn ED from my school. One is applying to Wharton, but has a 730 Math Level 2, one is in the top 8% of the grade, and the only one left is me. Haha, I pray.

OMG this is so exciting. I guess it helped to be yellow. Today just totally boosted up my confidence!

Let's compare these stats with last year stats:

Here are the Early Decision Application Numbers:

Here are the Early Decision Results:

Notice the minority numbers. The 172 Blacks reported applying Early last year were mentioned in the article, and thus proving the validity of the article mandy89 posted.
Asians submitted 1,219/4,148 total apps. So that number went down!
Blacks submitted 172. That number went up to about 200.
International submitted 534. That increased by 13% to 604.

The Results article says 202 Wharton were accepted, but the previous article doesn't tell the number that applied! damn!

I really don’t think minority matters that much when its only a 2% decrease this year. People didn’t apply early because it was the trend in the news. Penn will take the best possible accept for African Americans (maybe?). I hate affirmative action. Penn has plenty of Asians they don’t need anymore to be worldly. I have a hunch that this could be a year when the best student prevails over a student with a different skin color or from a different state.

I'm just hoping that the majority of the black applicants are underqualified. It would be tough competing with a bunch of well qualified URM.

im just waiting for the upcoming DP article, i hope it has more information

How often is the DP updated?

i think every day
