Penn Essay

Is anyone else doing the Penn supplement essay yet?

I don't quite understand the context of the question.. Help me out please!

"Benjamin Franklin established the Union Fire Company, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the American Philosophical Society, Pennsylvania Hospital, and, of course, the charity school that evolved into the University of Pennsylvania. As they served the larger community of Philadelphia, each institution in turn formed its own community.

Which of the academic communities and social communities that now comprise the University of Pennsylvania are most interesting to you and how will you contribute to them and to the larger Penn community?"

Do we use the examples that were provided such as the Hospital and the Library? Because that seems quite irreleveant to the actualy University..? And by academic communities and social communities does that mean the clubs? The programs? The academic honor societies? I am so confused..

It’s for the most part just a fancy way of saying “Why us, and what will you contribute?” So talk about whatever you like about Penn, and what you’ll contribute as well.
