People have told me that they dont recalculate gpa.
is this true?
So many schools have different methods of recalculating GPA:

Penn does not recalculate GPA...they may discoumt gym classes and such, but still there is no GPA recalculation because GPAs from different schools can't be compared

That's recalculation...

I don't think you understand, dooit

they don't physically recalculate your GPA, they just discount Gym as a grade. They look at your grades as a whole and see if you challenge yourself. They don't take a calculator out and add it all up...in fact, I believe Penn gives a score of 1-9 for your high school work for comparitive puproses among applicants...it's a holistic approach

I don't know, but some girl who worked in the admissions office posted on CC a while ago and told us that this was exactly her role there.

May I ask what your sources are ? :)

I can't find the article, but it talked about one kid who was a Shakespearean actor with very good grades and they gave him a rare 9 for ECs and 9 for academics...needless to say he got in.

I'm pretty sure Penn uses an adademic index approach, but the GPA isn't a major factor...its more like they give you a score on course difficulty and one on how you handled it (though GPA shows how you handled it...but there is a difference in difficulty between schools so the academic index creates an even playing field): http://collegeconfidential.com/academic_index3.htm

excel, the reason why they don't recaclculate GPA is because teachers adjust difficulty according to the grading scale...if an A is a 96, then they will make tests easier. If an A is a 94, tests will be harder. Most teachers try to mantain a bell curve of grades...they want at least some As and Bs

Wait, so Penn actually ready your app and give you a rank?

Like 5 for ECs, 6 for grades, and then do they add it up or something?

How does all that work?

Ya it was in the book "A is for Admissions"
PEnn ranks from 1-9 (9 being the best)
Harvard does something ike 1-6 (1 being the best)

Are you serious?????!!!!!!!

I need to buy that book....

"A is for Admissions" is a great book, with all kinds of great information.

if I calculated my gpa where A=4, B=3 and C=2, and add 1 pt. for honors and AP..I would have a gpa of 4.377. is that good?

depends if you have a good class rank and you took the hardest schedule possible

hardest possible (IB) and 48-710 rank...I just want to know if this is average or below average.

What is your unweighted? Both will be taken into consideration if both are on your transcript; Penn will not recalculate your GPA. The difficulty of your school is also taken into consideration when judging your rank. In short, GPA and rank are not numerical ways to rank applicants, but rather a portion of each application to be considered by the adcom.

so how does Penn's admission process work? Is the whole thing out of 9 points? ????

in my school my W is 4.135 and UW is 3.35
but if I calculated my gpa where A=4, B=3 and C=2, and add 1 pt. for honors and AP..I would have a gpa of W:4.377 UW:3.64

so do I have a decent chance if I'm a 7 on the 1-9 scale? assuming my ecs/essays are good?

12041987 said what is correct

and peachykween, I think you have a good shot with a 7 but who knows

Well, than I am W:4.135 and UW: 3.35
Rank 48 out if 710 (the rank will keep getting better I guess it to be about the high 30's when I apply)
