penn greek life!

Hey guys! I was accepted to wharton ED and I just wanted to hear a little bit about greek life from current penn students :-) I just have a few questions...

-How does Penn greek life compare to state schools? How about Cornell/Dartmouth/Duke? My older sister is at Duke, and my brother's at UVA, so I was wondering how the greek life compared.
-Are the sororities super exclusive? I'm a theta legacy, but there's always that fear of not receiving a big or staying out of the loop.
-How would you rank the sororities? I'm not trying to find one based on its rank, but I was wondering which ones were top tier, second tier, etc. and does which sorority you're in affect which frats you mix with?
-If you don't go greek, are there still parties? Can you still go to frat parties?

Thanks in advance!

hey! Congrats on your acceptance!
I’m not a current student, but for your last question, I think the answer is Yes, there still are parties. I doubt that only sororities and frats hold parties, I’m pretty sure they happen all over campus, from freshman dorms to upperclassmen apartments. Also, from what I know, you can go to frat parties if you’re not in a frat. But I guess that one depends on the frat and how eletist it is.
Good luck!

You can definitely go to frat parties no matter who or what you are. Not to say there aren’t private parties once in a while, like after initiation or when inviting nationals over. What they do limit is the window when students can first join a fraternity or sorority. There always have been and will be fraternities that have close relationships to sororities, and even some among the frats and sororities that have dual parties (brother frats and sister sororities) whether or not there is a national link.

It’s like a buffet, pick and choose what you want.

I’m a freshman greek at Penn and i love it ! I’m fairly unbiased though so i feel like i can answer these questions.

Greek life is pretty big at Penn. If you don’t want to be a part of it you definitely don’t have to be, but a lot of social people do it.

-Are the sororities super exclusive? I’m a theta legacy, but there’s always that fear of not receiving a big or staying out of the loop.

Legacy doesn’t have much to do with getting chosen, unfortunately. But I would say as long as you are a normal person whose semi good at making conversation you’ll get a bid.

-How would you rank the sororities? I’m not trying to find one based on its rank, but I was wondering which ones were top tier, second tier, etc. and does which sorority you’re in affect which frats you mix with?

Generally, around campus it’s viewed as

1st: TriDelt, AXO, Theta
2nd: APhi, ChiO, SDT
3rd: SK
4th: Zeta

But there are AWESOME girls in every sorority so it doesn’t really mean a whole lot, it’s honestly where you fit the best.
-If you don’t go greek, are there still parties? Can you still go to frat parties?

Yes! There are definitely more options if you go greek though, but you can still go to frat parties, especially if you are a girl.

Hey I’m also a freshman.

-How does Penn greek life compare to state schools? How about Cornell/Dartmouth/Duke? My older sister is at Duke, and my brother’s at UVA, so I was wondering how the greek life compared.
I’m not sure! I’ve never visited the other schools, but Penn is known as the social ivy! It’s probably more comparable to Duke, but then again I’m not sure.

-Are the sororities super exclusive? I’m a theta legacy, but there’s always that fear of not receiving a big or staying out of the loop.
It’s competitive, and there are always disappointed girls. You would have to go through rush in the spring where you visit every house! I received a bid but decided not to take it because of huge time commitments, but my RM loves it!

-How would you rank the sororities? I’m not trying to find one based on its rank, but I was wondering which ones were top tier, second tier, etc. and does which sorority you’re in affect which frats you mix with?
It definitely affects which frats you mix with. I won’t post rankings exactly because everyone wants something different. When you rush, you have to go to every house and meet with different girls. It’s pretty easy to find the houses that you like and the one’s you definitely do not like.

-If you don’t go greek, are there still parties? Can you still go to frat parties?
YES. Really the only thing you miss out on are mixers. Which are closed parties between a frat and a sorority. But Penn is only about 30% Greek and the other 70% still love to have fun. Philly is a great city and what makes Penn so great is that you don’t need to be in a sorority or frat to have something to do. There are tons of BYOs downtown and always fun things to do around campus. Or you can always hit up the frat parties on the weekends.
