Penn Housing

How is housing determined at Penn? Do you randomly get assigned to a dorm your first year? What about in subsequent years? Do most kids live on campus, and if so, how does that process work? Or do most kids live off campus?

Also, how nice are the dorms at Penn?

Thanks for any insight you all can give me.

Ditto with your other thread as well.

@hardworker99 Freshmen list their top 6 choices on the housing application. Rooms are assigned by a random lottery. Most freshmen get one of their top 3 picks. After freshmen year housing is not guaranteed. I read that about 50% move off campus after the first year. The dorms vary – some have A/C, some don’t have A/C, some have community baths, some have private baths shared between roommates, some have a dining hall in the building, some have tiny rooms, some have large rooms. Many of the college houses have been renovated recently. Gender neutral housing is available. A new college house is opening in 2016. Upperclassmen get their housing assignments or waitlisted before the freshmen lottery.
