so i kinda wanna ED-Penn next year, especially wharton or one of the joint programs. but the problem is, Penn especially hates my school--long story. Dunnoy why but has something to do with how ppl from my school never matriculate when they get in, i guess, and how our val from a couple years back did not rescind her penn application after getting in Harvard ED and they found out and now nobody gets in. even HYPSM acceptees get rejected from Penn, and Penn has a much higher acceptance rate than all of those. their apps couldn't have been too different. the only girl to have gotten in was a doulbe legacy/donated quite a lot. so help

If someone from your school either gets in ED and then breaks the agreement or is accepted ED to another school and doesn’t withdraw his/her application from Penn, it leaves a black mark on the school for a few years. That would explain why students from your school have some trouble even though they are qualified. It’s really on your school’s guidance office; they are supposed to explain the spirit of the ED agreement to all students who apply, and if a student breaks that agreement it looks bad on the guidance department. Therefore, Penn (or any school) is going to be very careful when dealing with students from that school.

Of course, it’s worth a shot. Just make sure you have a viable backup.

Harvard was SCEA. She wouldn’t have needed to rescind.

Harvard used to have ED back in the day. They changed to EA then SCEA and now nothing.

Penn likes my school, but we almost never have someone admitted to Wharton. You just have to hope that you’re strong enough to overcome anything like that.

yeah this was 5 yaers ago

I suggest you bring your concern to your regional admissions officer for further advice.

I’m not sure they’ll admit to it though. The same thing happened at my school. Someone got into both Stanford and Harvard SCEA 4 (I think) years back and chose Harvard, but then Stanford found out. Nobody’s gotten into Stanford since then. It sucks, but college admissions is always a bit quirky. Just do the best you can and put a lot of effort and enthusiasm into your Why Penn essay to show how sincerely you want to attend.

“Harvard used to have ED back in the day. They changed to EA then SCEA and now nothing.”

Harvard has had a non-binding early admission program for over 30 years.

Hahaha, we’ve felt the same way about MIT at my school, but I believe two students got in there last year. One got in early this year. I wouldn’t say Penn is mean to your school. It’s your school that messed up with that student. I can understand why they don’t trust/black-ball your school. I agree with the previous advice, talk to your regional counselor. Let them know that you are truly interested in Penn and nothing else. Hopefully it works out for you.

Penn rejects a lot more HYPSM accepts than one would think.
Penn will do more than most schools to keep its yield high and acceptance rate low, why not just reject some at the very top?

no, only last year it was ED wasn’t it??? but i KNOW that about 5 years ago it was ED

“i KNOW that about 5 years ago it was ED”

No, it wasn’t. My personal experience goes back to 1995, and I can tell you from direct observation that there was never ED during that period.

hmmi guess you are rite. i’ve been lied to for the past 10 years!!! haha jk. um, she did something that was illegal–perhaps she applied to both Harvard and Penn at teh same time?

Well, Harvard was single choice early action and Penn was early decision which is binding. You have to sign your name saying you’re not going to go anywhere else if accepted. The mistake the person made was that she didn’t rescind her application before she was accepted, which puts the bindingness of the early decision in effect. Basically, she messed up.

You should focus on school, focus on letting Penn know that you’re worth accepting. Like I was talking about MIT before, for years we talked about how no one got accepted to MIT from my school. We finally broke the barrier last year. Let me tell you, it’s not that MIT is unfamiliar with my school either (they’re right down the street…errr well a little further from Harvard).

yeah we have a thing with MIT too…absolutely no one got in since 1999 (MOP guy so yeah) and then one legacy girl. but i don’t recall anyone ever angering MIT, so i dont know, maybe it’s just the MIT system, which is completely random and unexpected, but i totally respect all the decisions that they made since they’ve made MIT such an amazing place, i Love both MIT and Penn but i think i’ll apply ED to penn =)

and lol how cool is that, MIT is right down your street! woot

Brown accepts next to 0 students every year from my school. one of my friends got into Stanford, Dartmouth, Williams, Amherst, Duke, and waitlisted at Harvard and Yale but flat out rejected from Brown.

ugh that suxxx =(((((
