I am a non traditional student who went to community college 8 years after high school. After two years of that, I have been admitted to UVA (in state tuition, excellent financial aid covering all tuition and some expenses; also my wife works full time so I will not have to take out any loans for cost of living). I have also been admitted to Penn LPS and am not sure of financial aid there yet, but I have heard it’s not very good and would expect it to be much worse than UVA. Is the Ivy League prestige worth it, even if I am in the LPS program which shows up on your transcript and may carry the stigma of being less competitive and having less intelligent students to some employers? I’ve read on this site about how the LPS program differs from regular Penn CAS, but I’m not sure how much info is outdated, and the LPS website doesn’t tell you much. Not sure what to do. Also worth it to note I already live in Charlottesville and would much prefer to live here all else equal.
UVA is very prestigious in its own right, some would say more so than LPS. In addition, the situation you describe makes UVA the clear winner.
Not even a question. UVA.
Hi! I am a high schooler currently dual enrolled part time at Penn LPS (through very small program- your classes wouldn’t usually have high schoolers in them, I promise!). The class I took this semester was 100% Penn undergrads, the professor was fantastic, and the course was fairly challenging. From what I’ve heard from undergrads, LPS classes are more or less the same as CAS classes (except they’re cheaper if you’re paying by the credit). I have no idea how it compares to UVA, but I think it’s a great education! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions
As a Penn alum, I’d say you have a fantastic option in a location you would prefer to live in. I’d go to UVA.
UVA looks to be your best option. No need to move, and no need to disrupt your wife’s career just yet.
Thanks all. Very much appreciate the insight. For whatever it’s worth my wife can work anywhere in the country and it would be zero inconvenience career wise to move. Jusf inconvenience (for both of us) logistically, socially, and community-wise. We’ve grown some roots here in Cville for sure. I think I was maybe making this thread subconsciously hoping to have my inclination toward UVA validated — part of me worries I am passing up an incredible opportunity to have “University of Pennsylvania” on my resume, but my heart is undoubtedly with UVA.
