Penn pre-college summer program

has anyone here done Penn's pre-college summer program?? If so, did it help you get in?

I got rejected from the pre-college program and got into Wharton RD.

:)

same with me. I got rejected from summer program and got into Wharton RD. On top of that, I got into the scholars program too (JSW).

interesting guys! But hey, you guys proved yourselves in the end =) I was going to apply for that program this summer… followed up with an internship with my uncle who is a geneticist at Upenn… but I desparately have to finish my Eagle project lol. I will be attending either the biomed research academy or the SAAST Biotech program. Any information on those?

Congrats again guys =)

And no, it wont help you get in unless you want it to. get to know your professors and write about the experience in your essay. Try to even get a letter of recommendation from one of the professors you had. this means getting an A is mandatory =)

Your OVERALL impression on them matters, but if you show a clear goal to get into Upenn, then this will “help” you. YOU determine how much though

TheKingofCards,
What you posted is exactly what I have been thinking. I will be attending the pre-college program and taking biology this year. The main reason I chose this program is to spend six weeks on campus and decide if I want to apply early decision, and at the same time take a class that I am very interested in that is taught by a Penn faculty member (when I visited, I was told that all of the classes are taught by Penn faculty). I was also told that the classes consist largely of college students, which I think is a good learning experience. The credit is also another benefit (1.5 cu for biology), it will enable me to take more advanced molecular biology classes when I get to college, wherever that is (I plan to major in chem or biochem).

thanks alot TheKingOfCards…that makes a lot of sense

No problem. It’s the truth though. I spent tons of time contemplating on whether or not I should go or not go… instead, I should have been thinking about WHY it would help me. It’s totally what you make of it, and DO try to make something extraordinary out of it because at least you have the money to go, right? It’s not an opportunity “most” people get or consider (for better or for worse), so either get some headway into your major, or decide that you NEVER want to touch Biology again. Either suffices =) You still get the Undergraduate experience and it will definitely help you determine whether or not you want ED. That’s what I am hoping to get out of it!

Also be sure to check housing, food, etc. All big parts of your experience. Just curious though, where “else” would you like to apply for in case Penn doesn’t suit your fancy once you get there?

it will probably sound crazy to some people, but i don’t exactly have an “exact” criteria for the schools i would like to go to, but instead I visit a bunch and see if I just like it or not…so right now my top schools are Penn, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Williams, Bowdoin, and Pomona
if I don’t like Penn it will probably come down to Williams or Pomona though

I did Computer Science/Programming as part of SAAST two summers ago and honestly I think I was able to write a seriously kickass Why Penn? essay because of that. While it didn’t directly help, I don’t think it hurt either, and I thought the program itself was fantastic.

hey kitczh did you get admitted into UPenn. Also did you have time to tour the school while you were there at the Summer program?

I applied RD to SEAS and was admitted. SAAST include an info session/tour of the facilities and you stay in the quad…although I had a lot of work, my free time was pretty relaxed and I got to explore campus which was nice.
If you do the program, it’s probably smart to try to get a decent grade. I got an A-.
