Question 3A asks you to name a penn professor whom you would like to study under or conduct reasearch with and why. I’m assuming the point of this question is to do some research about their college and dig deeper than just into the surface and the name. Is it just me, or is there some place I can find a list of professors and what exactly they have accomplished, etc. I know some people have posted that they knew people who attended PENN and that they received descriptive references fromthese friends who have had the professors. I know that on the PENN website there are department heads listed and such, but where exactly can I find out more. Or am I supposed to google UPENN professors and find out that way?

Sorry if this question has been asked already =(. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, please do not say PENN or UPENN. There is no need to capitalize. It's an abreviation, not an acronym.

You're right, the point of the question is for you to find out a little more about the school. You don't really need to put much work into it. It will only be about 3 sentences anyway. You shouldn't have to google a name, but I guess you could if you wanted to. I'm not going to give you a link because you should really be smart enough to find that on your own. Go to a department you're interested in and find the list of professors. Most of them will have webpages with info on what research they've done. Pick one that sounds interesting. Good luck.

Adf, there is no need for such blatant ignorance. Are you not receiving sufficient attention at home? If you're not going to "post a link" for him, then don't post that you are not going, just don't do it. You come off as a pseudo-elitist trying to show his superiority. But in reality, you come off as a small and stupid person. Do some introspection and come back when you feel you can be a productive member of this board, because that's what people need, not idiots criticizing them in this hectic time that is college applications season.

I assume that you're applying to Arts & Sciences. In that case, browse this website for departments; each site should have a section for faculty:

Ugh, I'm tired of people taking things so seriously on here. It's the internet..can you really judge how much attention I get from my parents by reading one post? gohenry, I'm sorry if I belittled you at all. My comment wasn't meant to sound that way. I didn't want to post the link because I really think the whole point of the question is to make sure the applicant is willing to take a few minutes to research something about the school on his or her own.

actually, the all-caps is used in certain university communications (and so is the u in front of penn), so criticism over these semantics isn't totally warranted, due to these inconsistencies...

but yes, use of all research available is key to answering the professor question with enough detail and passion to satisfy the reader.

Hey, i'm also applying to Penn this year.
That question is actually very stupid, they ask you to say why you'd like to do research with a particular professor, BUT - here's the stupid part - your answer is limited to 500 characters?!?!?!
thats 100 words - how am i going to describe something like that in 100 words?

there's no big difference; if you write about any penn professor who does research, you'll be fine. i suppose you could even get away with writing about a grad student, and just mentioning the professor with whom he/she works.

Okay... great, I have to cut down a 300 word essay into thirds... that's wonderful. When they say short answer... they should specify. I want to personally thank all the application makers for not including word limits.
