Can anyone tell me more about residential programs? The information from the website and brochure is a little vague… are residential programs where everyone in that program lives on the same floor, go the same classes, etc? What is the benefit of residential programs other than getting to attend dinners, events, meet other people? Are they a good resume builder, or is it just something fun you can do? Is there a commitment for residential program students- like would they make you leave if you don’t attend most events?
Just to answer the specific questions you listed: They normally live on same floor, or at least close to each other within the College House. No, they don’t take the same classes (it’s independent of your academic program). The benefit vs attending dinners, events, etc. is that it’s a way to automatically be part of a group who have common interests. No, they’re not a resume builder (at least for the most part) and are just for fun. I think level of commitment depends on the program.
Most students don’t end up taking part in a residential program. I’d only recommend it if you are really passionate about a particular topic that is covered by a residential program.
My D did it both freshman and soph years, and got her first choices in housing as a result. The commitment is low (basically once a week) and everyone does their own thing the majority of the time.
