Penn State, Purdue, Howard, or Cal Poly SLO!?!? Where should I go?

Hi, so it’s that time of the year when I have to choose where I want to go to school. So here’s the thing:

Penn State University Park: Accepted in Division of Undergraduate Studies; I have to pay $41,000 a year with very LITTLE and almost USELESS loans (this is pretty tough on my family); I’m from California but the school is relatively close to some relatives in New York (I really like that)

Purdue: I could choose to be waitlisted for College of Engineering for fall 2010 and/or guarantee admission for spring 2011 (this is my fault, I applied too late); in Indiana, not very close to any relatives; about $38,000 a year (they didn’t mention any aid); ranked the highest for undergraduate engineering out of all the schools

Howard: Accepted into School of Engineering; Legacy Scholarship: covers tuition and fees all four years (very nice of them); in DC so it is somewhat close to relatives in NY; I would very much like to experience an HBCU

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: Accepted into School of Engineering; VERY close to home (well, at least compared to other schools…I’m from Los Angeles); B-E-A-utiful campus and city (so I’ve heard from a lot of people); around $32,000 a year (no aid but it’s not too bad)

Where should I go??? They are all such good schools, but I was also thinking about trying to transfer to Cornell for sophomore year. Based on location, reputation, and costs where do you guys think I should go? I’VE GOT 4 WEEKS TO DECIDE!!

Thanks in advance :D

Cal poly’s tuition is around $5000-6000 only btw. For that price compared to the other, cal poly is the way to go.

Why would you say that Cal Poly will cost you $32,000 a year? It’s more like $20,000. Maybe $21,000 total. Give or take, depending how far away you live. If you’re from LA, transportation shouldn’t be too costly vs someone OOS.

dude cal poly’s cost of attendence with no financial aid is around 22k where are you getting 32k from?

Wow, a full ride at Howard? That’s really good. The other schools are good ( i really like CP as an alum), but I would go with Howard in that situation.

DC is great by the way. I did an internship there.

I agree, DC is an awesome place. I could tell you all I want about how great Cal Poly is, but a full ride to Howard is a lot to pass up just to stay near home. You could probably fly home as often as you wanted and still pay less than you would for tuition somewhere else.

i would go to Howard i mean seriously full ride = $140k congratulations.

$32K per year is the out-of-state estimated cost of Cal Poly. If you are from LA and have lived in CA for a few years, the $22K rate is a better estimates of expected cost.

oh i didnt know you were OOS

With a full ride Howard should be the winner hands down. I am a BIG Cal Poly fan (son is in AE) and would love to have you choose it but DC is a phenomenal place - the antithesis of LA - and Howard a great school. You’ll do great. Good luck.

if you want to transfer to Cornell howard or penn state is probably the way to go

why would you even want to transfer? nothing is going to get better than Full ride to howard and i doubt they give full rides very easily at cornell to transfers
