Accepted to the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State-University Park, both the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts at McGill, and Emory University - College of Arts and Sciences. I am looking to major in Economics, and there's a chance I'll double with mathematics. I was wondering what people's thoughts are on these schools, regarding academics, social life, and just anything really. Please list any pros/cons you can think of.

How do they compare in cost? Are you instate for PSU?

Penn State would be an excellent choice. They are one of the top schools for recruiters. The fact that you have been accepted to Schreyer’s is a plus. The academics are top notch, they have tons of school spirit, so I guess the social life is okay. The only down side to PSU is that it’s in the middle of no where, but they claim they are their own city, and the kids don’t seem to mind it. It was a deterrent for my own kids. :(

McGill and Emory are excellent choices as well. Do you want a Canadian experience?

Have you visited all? What were your thoughts? You’ve got a difficult decision. Please let us know what you decide.

I’m not instate, but I did get a substantial amount of money. Still expensive, but pretty good for out-of-state. I’m from Long Island. Not sure if McGill would be a good fit, even though it’s probably closer to my home than Emory is, being in Canada would feel a bit weird, just based on intercollegiate sports and all. I’ve visited Penn State plenty of times because my uncle teaches there; I spent half my summer there almost every year. I’ve visited McGill once, seemed OK. I wasn’t a huge fan of the campus but I didn’t hate it. I’m visiting Emory next week.

Cost-wise, Penn State and McGill are about the same while Emory would be significantly more.

Penn State honors is something you don’t want to turn down. Emory is also highly regarded. If Emory is unaffordable, go for Penn State.

So I would say McGill is out, based on what you are sharing.

I am somewhat biased because I think Penn State is a top notch school. I couldn’t get either of my daughters to go there, so I don’t have first hand knowledge, but it has always been a highly respected institution.

I hope you choose PSU, but you have to know where the best fit is for you. Please let us know what you decide.

Penn State is number 1 ranked in recruiting kids out of college so combining that with an honors degree would probably get you a solid job right out school. PSU has the atmosphere that the other two schools don’t. It also has the party scene if that’s what your looking for. All-around it is arguably one of the most well-rounded institutions but doesnt hold the same reputation as the others. It’s quite different from Emory so you gotta see what you like.
