Hi all I have been accepted into the Schreyer honors college(pre med major), UCLA, and USC along with other UCS for biology. Waiting on UCB and princeton and Harvard next week. What is your opinion on which school would be the best for someone aspiring to get into medical school? I am just trying to gather info to make as informed a decision as possible.
I am leaning quite heavily to SHC right now but would like to hear what others’ opinions/ experiences at the colleges are like
Probably want to minimize debt so you have more money available for med school, right? Which is the cheapest? You’re out of state for at least one of them.
Penn state is Oos
Cost with the 4500 scholarship is about 40k a year
Ucla is about 34k
Usc I received a nms presidential scholarship so it would be around 42k
So talk with your parents about cost, and see if you can swing 40k+/year and whether that affects how much you’ll be able to pay for med school.
In the meantime I’ll mention some perks of SHC since that’s where I go. I’m a current sophomore in engineering. The honors housing is great, and if you take advantage of it your first year it’s guaranteed for all four, meaning you never have to participate in the housing lottery. There are extended quiet hours, a computer lab with scanners and printers, and several lounges for working or socializing. Scholars also get priority registration for classes – earlier than just about anyone else, except for athletes, I think. Honors classes are smaller and may be more in-depth or theoretical than normal classes. I have taken three honors math classes, two English, and one criminology. Math was hit-or-miss with difficulty, but the others were/are just a little bit more work than a normal class. There are quite a few honors classes available since it’s such a big university, so whether you prefer to have your honors requirements overlap with your major requirements (like my math classes, or I could have taken honors organic chemistry) or with your gen-eds (crim), you’ll find something to take.
There are a couple premed-specific honors programs on the website: https://www.shc.psu.edu/academic/resources/premed.cfm
