I got into both these schools and I am from NC and can't decide. I plan to major in Biology. I am concerned about the weather at PSU and it is also rural and far away. Regarding UNC, it is only 30 minutes from home and I feel it may be grade 13 for me as I would know a lot of kids there already. what do you think ?

hard to justify the extra $$$. Once you move on campus it seems like you are much farther away. Go to UNC

I would choose UNC - don't worry, the campus is large enough that you won't see that many of your classmates unless you choose to. You have a great University at your doorstep for a very reasonable cost - you should take advantage of that! And the weather is pretty brutal at Penn State. A lot of Penn Staters will be wishing they were in NC come January!

You will find with a school that large (UNC) there will be so many more people there that you DON"T know. You don't have to associate with old high school classmates if you don't want to. And who knows? It might be nice to see a familiar face now and then.
We live in NC too. S is at State along with quite a few others from our town. He likes hanging out with old friends but has met so many new friends from other places too. He doesn't have classes with the friends from home and really only sees them randomly walking across campus or if he makes plans to get together with them. Some of them he really never sees.
If the only compelling reason to go to PSU is to avoid being with people you know, I don't think it's worth that much more money. Are there other reasons for wanting PSU over UNC?

Other reasons are that my dad went there. My B is there now

Why do people hate their own state schools. I guess I am lucky I love Maryland. I don't see any reason to spend MORE money to go to PSU. When i opened this thread i thought maybe someone lived in Penn and is thinking between PSU and UNC. UNC all the way.

definitely UNC. its more academically sound, doesnt have 40,000 people and its cheaper.

I would go to UNC by a LANDSLIDE. Not only would UNC be a WHOLE lot cheaper for you than PSU, but UNC is obviously a better school in terms of academics and prestige. UNC also matches PSU in terms of school spirit, social life, athletics, etc.

This isn't even worth discussing - go to UNC

Yeah not even close - UNC. UNC in state is pretty much a given over anywhere outside the top 15 or so schools.

Not close. I got into PSU (out of state- I'm from NJ) and was denied UNC with two generations of alumni, family from NC originally and stats ABOVE the 50%. Don't throw away a great shot unless it's just not for you (and if you're worried about a ton of people being there from your high school- don't neglect to realize that a ton of people from PA will be at PSU, and all know eachother and it's just as bad)- trust me I went to Virginia Tech to avoid being in high school and I should have gone to UMD with the money they offered or PSU...

"Why do people hate their own state schools."

I don't!! I actually love UVA and would prefer it over any other state school.

BTW- UNC is also one of the best college experiences in the country.

UNC. More prestigous, better experience, and is nicer and cheaper.
