Penn state vs. UIUC vs. Virginia tech

Hi, I’ve been accepted into mechanical engineering in Virginia tech, mechanical engineering in Penn state and physics in uiuc.

I want to study mechanical engineering, so could you guys please help me out with which school I should go to? I’m very confused about this decision. Thanks

Rule out UIUC as you will are not accepted into ME and it would be very difficult to transfer into it. Either of the other two are excellent schools. It depends on costs and the environment you want.

You would be in General engineering at VT as a freshman before being able to move into mechanical engineering.

Yeah my mistake I put mechanical by accident, but do you have any thoughts on the schools?

One of my kids went to Virginia Tech in engineering . He loved it and we enjoyed visiting him in Blacksburg! There is a large engineering career fair and recruiting is excellent. It is a large school but the campus is manageable. The engineering building is only a few years old. I like the Penn State campus too and they certainly have great engineering as well. Both good options. Consider fit and finances. Good luck with the decision!

Are there GPA requirements for getting into the major or being able to stay in it. I will choose the option where are more likely to be to major in mechanical engineering.

Well for Virginia tech and Penn state, they didn’t really say anything about the GPA required to stay in the course, but I read that for uiuc you need to have mostly A’s to be considered for transferring into engineering.

At Penn State it’s a 3.2 currently. Could change.

I believe you need a 3.0 to get your first choice major at VT. You are exposed to all the departments in the first year before committing to a particular major, and you may end up deciding that you actually like something more than mechanical.
