Penn to NYC

What are some of the fastest/cheapest/best ways to get to NYC from Penn?

Fastest: Acela train on Amtrak
Cheapest: if you book it in advance, $1 Bolt Bus
In general bus will take you about 2 hours depending on traffic. Buses (Bolt, Mega, Chinatown) can run about $10-15. SEPTA + NJ Transit will cost about 20, take you less time (no traffic).

Any time I go to NYC, I take SEPTA to NJT. It’s $8.00 on the R7 to Trenton and then another $12.50 (or 10.75 if you get a round trip fare) to NYC. Trip takes around two hours and is infinitely more comfortable than the Bolt Bus

SEPTA+NJT usually takes me about half an hour longer (2 and a half hours vs 2 hours) than boltbus/megabus, but again, infinitely more comfortable.

Also, even if you were planning on taking Amtrak, I’d recommend the regional train. It takes only about an hour 15 minutes, and if you order ahead of time, you can get it for $34 each way, which isn’t a terrible deal, though there’s cheaper options.

Amtrak is WAY better than any mode of bus, and MUCH faster than the SEPTA+NJT connection (I’ve done each of the ways countless times). If you can afford it, take the regional train (Acela, while nice, is not worth it).

In my opinion, taking the bus is just too unreliable, and taking the Septa/nj trains just takes too long (even on good days). If you have somewhere you want to be at a certain time, the amtrak train is the way to go. If you’re just going to NYC to have fun and have no set schedule, the discount (formerly “chinatown”) buses are a good deal.

^you aren’t supposed to pay for the Acela tickets. the company you interview/work with is supposed to cover that. why else do we go to Penn?

Bolt Bus has wi-fi, which is the killer app for NYC transit. Not only does it have wifi, it has power outlets for your iphones, laptops, etc.

Meh, I just had a bad experience with BoltBus that made me not want to take it again… going to NYC on a Friday, we left at around 2PM, got caught in NYC rush hour… and then proceeded to get pulled over for making an illegal lane change in the Holland. Arrival time? 7:20. So yeaah

Thanks for the feed back. I was under the impression that amtrack was my only option, but these seem like better alternatives

You could charter a private jet/helicopter too…

^^ if anyone is doing that, pm me so we can split costs. I have nothing to do in NYC but if we go via private jet, I’m so in!

You could apparate, or use floo powder.

hahahaha actually, one of my friends flies planes as a hobby and offered to fly me down for move-in before he realized his plane was scheduled for maintenance that week. it’s not exactly “private jet” quality but i’m sure if he offers again in the future he’d be willing to take more people if they paid up…(we’re from NYC)
