Pennsylvania Grants

I live in Pennsylvania. My daughter has completed her FASA and was told by the State of Pennsylvania that since she has chose to attend college out-side of the of PA she is not eligible for PA grants. The school she has chosen is in Maryland. Maryland does not allow their residents to use their state grant funds to attend any college out-side of Maryland. So does this mean that my daughter is totally left out when it comes to grants or is Maryland going to offer her some type of financial assistance to attend their University?
I don't understand this. I live in PA, and pay taxes in PA, but can't get money for school from PA. Can someone shed some light on how this works, and is there somewhere else I should be looking for grant money?

The logic is that the money helps the economy in your state by helping students pay for PA colleges and keeps students from wanting to move out of state after finishing college.

she can't get a state grant from PA.

If she went to a state school in PA or where ever else they have a reciprocal agreement, then she might get a grant.

My son goes to school in NY. No state grant for him either.

yep it's true. Mine went to a college in Maryland 4 MILES over the state line....
I have a daughter in NC - she gets a PA state grant. yep. $400. If she had stayed in-state she would have gotten $2400.
My youngest wants a MD school. I am going to talk to their financial aide people and explain to them how much she will be "losing" by going there. don't think it will work but.....

JustAMomOf4: Did Maryland offer any financial assistance, since they are the cause of PA not granting financial aid? Since they take the same approach that PA takes, are they willing to use the grant $$$ not given to their residents that choose to attend school out-side of Maryland and give it to those who are coming in? If not what are they, both PA and Maryland, doing with grant $$$ provided by government, private sectors etc... sitting on it?????

they are giving it to PA residents that go to PA state schools

From the State of MD? no. she went to a private school. She did get a nice merit scholarship and a nice need grant. This made the cost not much more than going to a PA state U (ie Millersville).

My youngest applied to Pitt-Bradford. Charges the same tuition as Pitt (main campus). Her merit scholarship (before any need grant) makes her tuition at a MD private actually cheaper! She got a merit scholarship from Pitt too.
PA grand money goes to PA kids who attend school in PA.
My kids do have their Stafford loans through PHEAA - Keystone. I think they get a pretty good deal going through them. My daughter's NC school didn't want to go through them and wanted her to use their "preferred lender" instead but I insisted and she got a better deal.

Thanks for the help from all. I'll have to check into the merit scholarships and need grants. My best to all.

What's PHEAA doing with all their money? If you've missed the news in the last few months, they are giving themselves big bonuses and throwing grand parties!

mamabear1234: That's just fantastick! I have not read that anywhere, but I will definately check it out and then write to "Ask Tracy@NBC10.com" something's not right here.
