In the Fall, I am taking my son to University of Scranton open house and also to Susquehanna University. I would also like to add one more school for the weekend visit. His major is undecided but possibly accounting or something in a math related field. He prefers schools on the smaller side, 2,000 to 8,000 students. He is not interested in Binghamton. I plan on tying Oneonta into the mix when we visit Geneseo. We are travelling from LI.
What about Lehigh, in Bethlehem?
I believe Franklin & Marshall, Dickinson & Gettysburg are 1-1.5 hour drive from Susquehanna. Bucknell shouldn’t be too far either, but it’s admissions can be competitive.
I toured Dickinson with my son and liked it a lot. I’ve also been on campuses of F&M and Gettysburg and they are both very attractive. All three have a loyal following in my area (PA). They are on smaller side - 2,000 or so students.
Muhlenberg, F&M, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Juniata, Ursinus?
If your son is interested in an accounting major, make sure the colleges have that major. Many small liberal arts colleges do not. Also check for accreditation (preferably AACSB) for the business school; even better if the accounting department itself has accreditation. Both Scranton and Susquehanna business schools do have AACSB accreditation.
St. Joe’s in Philadelphia is about a 2 hour drive from Scranton. Very good business school.
Lafayette College in Easton. I also like Dickinson. Carlisle is a nice college town.
Marywood University is right in Scranton, about 2,000 undergrad.
Though both Lafayette and Dickinson are excellent schools, neither one offers an accounting degree. Marywood does, but their Business school is accredited not by AACSB (the “gold standard” for business-school accreditation) but by ACBSP.
Another possibility in Philadelphia, AACSB accredited and probably a safety with your son’s stats, is La Salle.
Lycoming College, Williamsport PA – It is one hour north of Susquehanna and close to major highways for your return trip to LI. It has a great accounting department. It is in a small city that offers internship opportunities. Solid school spirit and sports teams, beautiful campus, and solid merit for average students. A hidden gem in PA.
