Applying to Exeter

edited to fix typo

I’m applying to Andover, Exeter, Deerfield and Choate (and also reapplying to my local day school)
Good luck to everyone! I know it’s a lot harder to get into tenth grade, but hopefully things turn out well for all of y’all

@almondblossoms is it actually harder to get into 10th grade? When I was talking to an AO at Choate he said that there are less students accepted but also a much smaller applicant pool therefore it will “balance out”. I would assume it is a little easier because there are less legacy and connected students applying since they would have matriculated to the school in 9th grade–this is just an assumption though feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Does anyone have any actual statistics regarding 10th grade acceptance rates compare to 9th grade?

@CC4life , it varies from school to school. It is true that there are fewer spots for 10th. There also tend to be fewer applicants.

Many foreign systems have their natural break in sequence here, so there can be a lot of very qualified foreign students (and some schools, knowing this, allocate a number of the open sophomore spots to them.) But again, not all.

Overall, you probably are not gaming the system and getting an advantage by applying as a sophomore. But YOU may be a stronger applicant this year than you would have been last year, and that’s all that matters.

@gardenstategal I agree 100% with your comment our DS is leveraging his hook as an athlete to try and get into boarding schools. As a grade 9, he would not have been able to be an impact player on the varsity team but this last season has helped him grow and mature and this makes him more valuable and wanted by the varsity coaches. Schools that would not have considered him last year are taking a serious look this year.

@CC4life @gardenstategal Actually that makes a lot of sense - I didn’t take the smaller pool into account.

Also, what schools are you talking about (in terms of the ones that allocate sophomore spots to international students)? Or was that just a general comment? I’m a non-domestic applicant, so that’s good news!

And I definitely agree, that extra year gave a lot of time to improve myself and my application.

I applied to:

-Andover
-Exeter
-Choate
-Hotchkiss
-Brooks
-Loomis Chaffee
-NMH
-Concord
-St. Mark’s
-Groton
-Lawrence

Applied to a lot because I need full aid soo…

I’m also a repeat 10th grader so a little different

I’m kind of freaking out now about repeating 10th. I’m transferring from a private new England day school as an international student, and I feel and hear that a lot of schools barely admit students who they think are already having pretty good opportunities. My school is in some leagues with private BSs, so a lot of interviewers thought we were a BS too…

Anyway, as the exact opposite of URM, I applied to a lot of schools:

  • Hotchkiss
  • Choate
  • St. Mark
  • Loomis
  • NMH
  • Hill
  • Kent
  • Taft
  • two safeties

Safeties?

well they are not particularly known so I didn’t put it up

On another note, I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about Exeter’s repeat year rate. I know that at other top boarding schools (Andover, Choate, Deerfield, etc.) it is very common, however, when I spoke with an AO at Exeter I was told around 25% of their applicants are applying for repeat year. About a month later, I spoke to their director of admissions and he said around 10% of students are repeating and “not to use it as an admissions tactic.” Has anyone else heard anything about repeating and how common/why people repeat at Exeter? Assuming 10% of students are repeating compared to 25% of applicant pool, wouldn’t that be a VERY small amount of accepted repeaters?
