people who smoke at parties

I’m sorry but, you people seem to be too stupid to understand the dangers of secondhand smoke. Do you not understand the serious health risks hat can arise from it? Asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory malfunctions?

In certain situations, yes, it is possible to people to move from you if you’re smoking. If you’re at a party, it’d make more sense to move out the way since it’s a more laid-back, open atmosphere. However, you’re telling me if someone walks into a restaurant and starts smoking, everyone who doesn’t like it should leave? Seriously?! YOU’RE the one causing the problem, so YOU’RE the one who should step out for a smoke. People shouldn’t have to adjust themselves for your habit. That’s not fair.

My sister has asthma that’s triggered by smoke and I have two small nieces and one nephew. Why should they suffer or have to pack up their things and leave because your dumbasstic self wants to shorten your life with a cancer stick?

Well if it’s a party I don’t see why I have to move my dancing (and my partner) somewhere else simply because an arrogant smoker walks in

umm kinda hard when there are 25 people around you in a living room.

The same arguement can be used against non-smokers. Why should I have to go outside or somewhere else because YOU don’t like it? Also, in case you didn’t notice, you don’t have to smoke to shorten your life. Do you drive? Think about how many fatal car accidents there are a DAY…you are risking your life getting in a car. What about junk food/fast food…tons of diseases and health problems from being overweight or eating bad food. Live in a large city? You are breathing in polluted air from cars, trains, factories, etc.

Unless you live in a hut, grow your own food, never drive, etc…most things you do are risking your life on a daily basis. NO DIFFERENCE than smoking. Many people smoke all their life and live long lives. Many people live a “clean” life and die young. You can’t say- oh because you smoke you are going to get lung cancer…uh hello…people who don’t smoke/are around smokers often can get it too!

Death is a part of life. It is going to happen to everyone. Might as well let people enjoy what they like while they are living. Should we be allowed to smoke in a kids resturant or playground? No, we should not. Should we be allowed to smoke on a plane? No, because people can’t just get off the plane.

But as far as resturants, bars, etc…if you don’t like it, you can leave. You have that right. Taking the right away from smokers is ridiculous, not to mention devestating to the economy! Many bars, resturants, etc have lost money from smoking bans…smoking has done a ton of GOOD for many people…like jobs…for example.

Get over yourself. You are going to die sometime anyway.

Mortality rates (in terms of lifespan shortening, on average) for driving are drastically different from mortality rates for car driving. Like on several orders of magnitude.

Because YOU are infringing upon my civil liberties to enjoy a public good (air).

Thank you for proving my point.

Tell me, do you work in a cancer lab? Do you know what benzo[a]pyrene is?

I’m sorry, but I don’t remember you ever being the Grim Reaper. How in the hell do you get the power to compromise my health and shorten my life a bit? Of course I know that I’m going to die and everyone else will, but why would you rush your death? I’m still going to wear my seat belt, I’m still going to try to eat healthy, I’m still going to get adequate sleep.

The reason why you should step outside (not saying that you should leave the place completely) is because it’s affecting my health! I guess when people are infected with the flu they should be able to go places and infect others “because we’re all going to die anyway.” or let pyromaniacs set fire to places “because we’re all going to die anyway.” or let those with severe mental issues let out their pent-up anger by shooting up their fellow classmates “because we’re all going to die anyway.”

There’s a TOTAL DIFFERENCE from you smoking and me in a car. I ride in a car to make life easier, you smoke because it’s an addiction. Do you smoke to get to work? Smoke to get to class? Smoke to go to a family member’s house? A car is a necessity for the average American. Smoking is not. When you smoke, you knowingly put yourself in danger. You know that there’s a high possibity of you develpping lung cancer. If you develop health problems, it’s entirely your fault. You don’t NEED to smoke. Yes, it’s a hard habit to break, but your life won’t be significantly limited if you give up smoking. Everyone doesn’t joyride, everyone doesn’t drive like maniacs, everyone doesn’t text and drive, those are uping your chances in a wreck. Most people want to get from Point A to Poin B in one piece. Now, if someone gets into a car accident, I can feel remorse for them because they may have been driving responsibly and been a victim of circumstances. Smoking and driving are risks you take in life but what do you gain out of smoking? Relaxation? There’re thousands of safer ways to relax but there aren’t many options as convenient, fast, and accessible as driving.

Yes, living in the city, you do inhale polluted air but does that mean I’m going to go to a radiation plant and inhale all of the fumes they produce? I eat junk food and fast food but it doesn’t mean I’m going to eat McDonald’s for breakfast everyday for 20 years; I eat it in moderation. I could get an STI from my first boyfriend but that doesn’t mean I’m going to have sex with the cutest stranger I see. Just because Jonny was lucky into not getting lung cancer and he smokes a pack a day doesn’t mean I’ll share the same luck. Of course I know some people live healthy lives and die young, but how can this justify you increasing your chances of dying from the same thing they died from? Cautious people die in house fires but I won’t leave a candle burning while I sleep because of this. Innoncent people are attacked by dogs but I won’t walk by the junkyard where the dogs come inches away from tearing your arm off.

How in the world is banning public smoking “devestating” the economy? I can understand bars letting in smokers since it’s more of a laid-back, open atmosphere like a party but when you have young children involved and environments inappropriate for that sort of activitiy indoors, you shouldn’t do that.

Again, YOU cause the problem, so YOU need to step out. Are you saying that if children are rambunctious in the grocery store, you should have to leave because you have the right? If someone’s talking very loudly on the phone behind you in line while your baby’s sleeping, you need to leave or deal with it? Again, why would you knowingly put yourself in a dangerous situation when the benefits are little or there’re smarter options available? Are you seriously THAT dense? My god, I’ve met some characters over the Internet but you top them all.

If you’re ever met at gunpoint with anyone or are about to be raped, I hope you have the same nonchalant mindset.

Don’t blame me when you light up at a party and I bust a cap in your ass. You were going to die sometime anyway.

* You are going to die sometime anyway. *

Most nihilist stance ever. According to the reasoning, we should abolish seatbelt laws, let security decisions on flight to be taken by airlines (if pilots and passengers are willing to take the risk, so let it be), stop most expensive government-funded medical research and so on.

That’s utterly hobbesian… Sad to have read that.

Unless, of course, you work there.

Quick- Everyone get worked up! lol

Why do non-smokers think their rights are more important than a smokers rights?
You are not above anyone. I really don’t care if it hurts your lungs. You say there is a difference between driving a car and smoking. Sure, there are obvious differences, but the point is both can kill you. Eating fast food can kill you. Walking down the street can kill you. Anything you do can kill you, so why do you care if smokers smoke in a BAR??? If you are in a bar you are drinking, which is much more dangerous than smoking is.

I am only worried about myself, and I don’t want to smoke outside in the 100 degree heat with humidity, or with a below zero windchill. Not happening. And if im forced to, im going to smoke right by the door you have to walk past.

Someone said I am the problem so I need to step out. Nope, I am not the problem. I have no problems with smoking inside. YOU are the one that has the problem, YOU leave.

^^You’re joking, right? You’re just trying to get people worked up and you’re sitting behind you’re computer screen laughing your ass off at them, right?

My point is this – smokers only comprise about 20% of the U.S. adult population, why should 80% of the people have to step outside to avoid your nasty and disgusting habit?
Why should 80% of the adult pop (plus innocent kids) have to avoid going to a favorite restaurant or other public venue because you choose to smoke and don’t care who you make miserable?

Are you really this arrogant or is this just a joke to you?

Do you know the difference between a positive and a negative liberty? Do you even have any idea what a “right” is?

Your liver is particularly good at removing alcohol. Just make sure you don’t overdose.

Your lungs are not evolved to remove carcinogens.

Smoking? Waste of money. Slow killer. Makes you look stupid, not cool. I don’t respect anyone who smokes because they obviously are addicted to it. There’s no other rationale in smoking, because there is no benefit in it.

I can put up with cigarettes, but if you smoke weed, etc, you’re lowing the university’s status and therefore mine. Go to f***ing CSUN if you’re going to do that.

LOL this isn’t high school…most adults don’t smoke to look “cool”…besides…I could care less if some kids thinks I look stupid. I have no one to impress. I am married, have great friends, and family. None of which cares that I smoke. And im my community, much more than 20% smoke. You try going to war zone and not having anything to let the edge off. A cigarette is pretty nice in those times. But there is “no benefit”…yah…ok…

people can smoke if they want to get off their nutz and stop whining.

people can shoot other people if they want to get off their nutz and stop whining

did I tell you, I get high off guns? yeah leave me to my own devices, why can’t you respect MY rights and let me shoot whoever I want? I get a kick out of it

lol you prob can’t even load a weapon, let alone shoot it. But im sure you have had tons of training on various “guns”…lmao…

yeah because second-hand smoke is SO comparable to instantly killing someone with a gun. You can avoid second-hand smoke. Avoiding a gunshot in considerably more difficult, however.

srose9173: my father owns 6 different guns and I’m a member of the NRA Youth. I plan to get my concealed carry permit next year. What about you?

Both are equally callous.

It’s funny that you all somehow managed to get into college yet you still buy into the old myth of second hand smoke. Didn’t anyone teach you to read before speaking?

Seeing as I actually work in an oncology laboratory, yes, they did.

What did you get on your MCATs?

Since you think secondhand smoke is so harmless, why don’t you try sniffing 5 mg of benzo[a]pyrene up your nose? Won’t be much more massive than a few grains of sand…
