I’m curious if anyone knows the estimate for what Percentage of Grinnell ED admissions go to athletes? I’ve heard of some SLACs having 50% of their EDs going to varsity athletes. Thanks.
That sounds about right. Since the total class is about 25% recruited athletes and ED comprises roughly half the class.
Thanks. Which SLACs have lower percentages of athletes in the early decision acceptances (creating more room for non-athletes)?
I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Larger schools would, but you asked about small (or selective?) LACs.
Selective schools, as a rule, also like to be at the top athletically, so they all recruit.
I have to concur with @cinnamon1212 - none, statistically, when you use the qualifier “small.” Athletes are a fixed number based upon number of teams the college fields, so the larger the class size, the lower the percentage of athletes admitted.
Someone else may have done a more elaborate analysis
Swat may be an outlier. In our kids’ processes, 7-10 years ago, it seemed like the number of supported spots (could be “factor” or “coded” using Amherst labels) were around 4-5 per non-football sports (might be some variation by sport, by year). At Swat, it seemed as if they might have been limited to about 2. The coaches were more eager than others to get a quick response I think because they could only have a couple of “offers” out there at a time.
Or not
Swarthmore is 25% athletes.
Now what can’t be measured is how many applied ED since the level of coach support and subsequent “requirement” to apply ED isn’t as it would be for D1 athletes, generally.
Or does Swat fill its athletic ranks with walk-ons? The 25% is number of athletes. They do have 22 teams for an undergrad population of less than 1,700
My impression is that they are indeed very low-key in recruiting athletes. I get the impression that at some of the most selective LACs, the coaches mostly wait to see who gets in and then recruit from the accepted pool.
Reed.
