What do you guys think of it? If you go there, how do you like it? Is the location too boring, or is there enough to do?
Thanks!
leslieknorp, Whitties don’t spend a lot of time on CC, you’re more likely to get answers from parents here. I’m trying to think of ways you can get more info from the students themselves. There is a face book group formed for each new freshman class, it’s usually a combo of committed and prospective students, you can join and ask specific questions, current students answer the questions. Before long, a new group will form and will be called “Whitman College Class of 2020”, it will be a great place to connect with present and future Whitties, the new groups usually form around Thanksgiving.
For now, I can answer this question from the perspective of a parent of a recent graduate. I’d say that who you are and what you consider exciting will determine whether you would find Whitman boring or not. There are tons of things to do on campus: IM sports, Varsity sports, clubs, Greek life, concerts, speakers, outdoor trips and adventures, theater, music, art shows, fun campus-wide events, and hanging out with friends. The town is charmingly cozy and provides good coffee houses, restaurants, shopping and nice small town attractions. The thing I’ve noticed about Whitties is that they tend to be able to self entertain, meaning they can create fun stuff to do and rally their friends to join them. They’ll think up a themed party or organize a new club, go on a climbing trip or convince their buddies to play IM football. The best part about Whitman is that it’s small and people get to be very close. Attending to rigorous academics, is also fairly time consuming. If none of this sounds great to you, you might find Whitman too boring.
Thank you!!
My son is a sophomore at Whitman now, and he loves it. He went there from a mid-sized city, and he may have been a little concerned about the middle-of-nowhere factor, but immediately made great friends and got involved with both fun activities and demanding courses. This year he is involved with faculty research projects, club sports, and a couple of clubs.
I agree with bopambo that the students create fun stuff and also jump in to new things readily.
The college brings in top authors and speakers to give talks. And there is good on-campus art and culture, theatre, etc.
