Perfect Attendance Myth?

Two people at my high school had perfect k-12 attendance. They were both definitely “rewarded”; one with a merchant marine scholarship (have no idea what that means but they said it had a value of like 100K plus), the other with a token scholarship of like 1-2k (not too bad if you ask me). However, I agree that there should be no predetermined reward, as was this case at my school. You shouldn’t encourage people to come to school sick. However, if, for some reason and with no incentive whatsoever, they do come to school every single day, then they should definitely be rewarded. I respect those that made it all the way through and I admire the accomplishment. I, on the other hand, missed frequently in high school and don’t regret it at all; kinda wish I had missed many more days, actually. I’ve only missed 3 classes (let alone days) in college thus far, however, and that’s in 2.5 years.

Why? How is having a good immune system (or making other people sick) an accomplishment worth rewarding?

Congrats!!!

Never missing a day of school is absolutely a great accomplishment and shows your dedication and drive!

I don’t know if you will be rewarded by the school (I hope so!) but remember to tell your future employers this - it will matter to them!

I find rewarding perfect attendance laughable. My child has missed very few days of school, but it has always been for a good reason.

Oh my goodness. This sounds like a hoax to me. I mean, I went to 5 elementary schools in two states - explain how they would even keep records that far back in that many places and put it all together to figure out that I had had perfect attendance (which I don’t, but the point still stands). Congrats on perfect attendance, but I wouldn’t expect anything more than a pat on the back.

LMAO in elementary school I had like 20 absences a year!
In high school though I average around 2-3 a year.

^Lol, I’m the opposite. I missed maybe 4 days a year at most through elementary and middle school. However, for high school, I’ve had around 10-15 a year since 9th grade. This year, due to lots of activities, a bad illness, and my increasing listlessness, I’ve probably missed somewhere around 25 days. >_>

I would find it impossible to not miss school at all. That’s insane. At this point, I’m applauding myself for having a full week with no tardies or missed classes. Bah.

I think it should be awarded for pure freakishness, not as a serious statement of values.

In reality, someone should stay home and rest when unwell. But if no circumstances whatsoever made one miss any school, it’s kind of nifty.
