How many shows per year do Syracuse Musical Theatre students have the opportunity to be in?
Hi, current freshman at SU drama here! There are three mainstage musicals put on every year at Syracuse, one of which is a coproduction with the local professional theatre Syracuse Stage which heavily draws on SU students to fill the ensemble (and the students who are cast get a stipend and equity points!). Syracuse Stage also generally does one or two other musicals a year, although they will usually be smaller casts so not as many students get hired. There were also be 1-2 studio musicals put on in our black box space, and generally 2-3 cabarets a semester. The department also puts on 3 mainstage plays every year (and very often they have singing/dancing incorporated into them), 1-2 plays in our blackbox, and several independent small cast plays put together by students. Casting at Syracuse is not guaranteed, but you will usually be cast in one (and occasionally two) drama department show a semester beginning your sophomore year, but are also encouraged to pursue outside opportunities and independent projects assuming time permits.
