Personal note

I don't know if you were just quoting his name, but addressing someone as "JEW" is just inappropriate, especially in the context you're using it in (to tell him off). I don't care what you meant, just don't do it.

who invited adaman to this forum??

What does invitation have to do with anything? I'm on this forum, I'm applying to UMD, and I have a relevant reason for being part of this thread (I responded to the OP). Honestly, if you don't care about what I said, that's fine. It's not a big deal, I realize that. I'm not looking for an apology or a fight or anything really. I just thought that, and I said it. I'm sorry if I came across as self-righteous or anything.

anyway, who are you to question the context in which i addressed BRUINSJEW?? it is no different that those who referred to him as bruins, so you, adaman, need to mind your own business

Mind my own business? It's a public forum. I'm not trying to pass judgment on you or anything. I'm just saying that it's something that can be interpreted the wrong way.

Somebody could use some sensitivity training I thought it seemed offensive, as well. Just trying to keep it real.

Getting back to the thread, IMHO, umcp is a great school by all objective measures but may suffer from the largess of its character. The honors program is highly rated nationally and allows for more student/prof interaction.

Mdelanoy, becareful how you tread, b/c the mods might not you let tread anymore. You did have an option to write Bruins, it can be taken offensively and as a person who is not jewish, but has family by marriage I find it offensive.

Going back to the thread and lets keep it there.

UMD is not for everyone, if you are okay with large classes in your undergrad classes than go for it. As I stated b4 H (bullet) went there, not only did we have fun at the games and walking the campus, we also would go into DC,...limited funs and we would spend the whole day visiting the smithsonians. Bruins thought I went IS, but actually travelled from Philly.

UMD has been ranked for many yrs as 1 of the best public univ., so my vote is if you don't mind SOME big classes (typically req. courses for everyone's degree) than go for it.

I also think that maybe Bruins problem is being far away (Fl), many students at UMD are from the mid-atlantic/northeast. You should also consider if you are a fit for UMD, will you be happier in your fresh yr closer to home. No child wants to admit that, but trust me a lot of kids do get homesick and decide that they want to transfer, it is just hard to say I am homesick, easier to say I hate the school. School can be very lonely if your suite mates are all IS and go home every couple weeks and you are sitting in a dorm by yourself. Also college is about the whole pic...wherever you go join organizations that you want to be in, it makes the transition easier.

I also believe anyone accepted to the honors program are placed in seperate dorms to create an immediate connection since the students will be partaking in a different program...think of it like the athletes, they have their own dorms also b/c they are in a specialty area.

bulletandpima,

You hit it right in the center, :). I am homesick too and my rents know that I cannot handle the cold weather and that huge change since Florida is so hot, I thought it would be nice, but it's not for me.

However,

the dorm situation that you were talking about is not realistic anymore. students are lucky to get housing, even as freshmen at maryland. some of the lounges have been converted into dorms. but, they mix and match people. not everyone in the Denton "Honors" community is Honors. Same goes for each other special vicinity (Ellicott is suppose to be GEMSTONE and CAMBRIDGE community is suppose to be scholars. But a lot of my friends live in each of these and I live in ellicott and none of us are affiliated with any of these branches.

which is why if you get into a living and learning program you should initially accept since you are guaranteed housing. all gemstone freshman who wanted housing got placed in ellicott unless they requested elsewhere. (im sure this is true for other living and learning programs, im just in gemstone, so im most familiar with it.) you can always drop out of the living and learning program once you get to school and are already living there.

According to this information, housing for freshmen is guaranteed. Or am I missing something?
HOUSING - First-Time Freshman Students

You're correct, oregonianmom. As long as you send your housing agreement in on time (by May 1) you are guaranteed housing as a freshman.

I think I've mentioned it before, but although freshman housing is guaranteed, incoming freshmen are well-served to send in the housing agreement earlier than later. D sent hers in at the end of April (waiting for those last couple of decisions/scholarship info to be sure), and is in a triple. Luckily, it was a planned triple (she knows some who are tripled up in a double room)....but every cubic inch of space is utilized in their room.

D had a wonderful first semester at UMD....The only class where her professor did NOT know her by name was an honors seminar that had 18 students in it--go figure. In fact, she's getting a letter of rec for a summer opportunity from one of her professors that had a TA doing the discussion section. Setting yourself apart just takes some initiative....I'm with somebodynew on the topic of getting to know your professors and classmates.....you can be as anonymous or NOT as you want to be. But-- every school isn't right for every student.

Thanks for that info, astrophysicsmom. My son will apply for housing ASAP if he is accepted, since UMD is his first choice. Glad to hear your daughter had a great first semester! Classes started again today, right?

in terms of a personal letter, my d was accepted (OOS)and never received such a note. she did the typical "priority admission" and had been notified online. absolutely no sign of their interest. however, once accepted, she received various mailings and phone calls from current students. for a huge school, they were incredibly warm. after much thought, she declined the offer, mostly because they did not have her major.

I got the note and was accepted with full merit into their gemstone program last year

@adaman If you don;t mind me asking, what were your score and GPA?
