I'm not writing this to bash anybody or to offend any group of people but personally, I hold a conviction that people who major or plan on majoring in concentrations pertaining to business do this mostly for monetary gains. Yes, I know there are a select few who are very passionate about what they study or hope to study but I'm just proposing a theory that people dealing in business tend to be a little bit more materialistic than your average Joe. Prove me right (or prove me wrong).

Btw, I plan on studying accounting/finance.

well honestly im going into business b/c its the only field that i know of that has no ceiling.. obviously you could say politics.. but mayb a few years down the road.... im in it for the Power aspect...

i love the idea of organizing and building systems and seeing them succeed... i love the fact that business really just represents man in its most animal form... its like being in a biology class everyday... just a lil different.. the fundamentals are the same... i rarely think about money... in fact the only time i think about it... is when i see it being measured as a status symbol...

but as you said... ppl such as yourself and me would be in the extreme minority here...

to me... i just feel that if i perform the best and exploit all of my opportunities ... the money and glamour will come...

I'm in total agreement with that last statement. That's what most people seem to be ignorant about. I feel no matter what field you're in, if you have a passion for it, THE MONEY WILL COME!!!!!!

As an accounting major, I'd be a liar if I said I didn't do it for some practicality, because accounting is a very stable career. However, I also like learning about the complexities of business, and the more I learn about business, the more I learn about myself, and how business is everywhere, it's people! People themselves are businesses, trying to influence and persuade to get what they want. The laws of checks and balances is true for people in the same way it's true for businesses.... it's all sort of strange when you think about it... the whole karma thing, I mean.... humans only get what they give, and the same can be said about businesses... humans who try to "cheat" the system are more often than not caught either by the law, or their own conscience. Businesses who try to cheat the system are also eventually caught, and they either lose customers massively, or the SEC takes them down (i.e. Enron).

So, yeah, that's why i am passionate about business, and especially accounting, because it's the science of keeping track of businesses' karma so to speak.

311Griff... you're right.. i missed that in my previous post....... i love business because it really is all about PEOPLE.... and how can something be more interesting than that?

there's some personal satisfaction in business. if it was just for the money, everyone would be doing dentistry -- sick paychecks and 35 hr weeks...

On another note, I did choose business for the opportunity to make money (versus a hit or miss career like architecture which I think I would enjoy, or engineering that has a low ceiling (comparitively) where I'm from). I love all of these things, so the deciding factor was money and potential to build something great.

I love doing a variety of things, so I figured if I like them equally, may as well make some dough in the process.

I don't know...I wouldn't choose dentistry for any reason even money seeing as how I hate science and suck at it too. Business is an industry where you could potentially become the next Bill Gates. I know, few people succeed as much as he does in business, but that holds in any industry. Only in business, that margin between that guy that succeeds wildly and the average businessperson is much higher.

BTW, planning on majoring Finance and psychology maybe....and then investment banking, MBA, then venture capital.

KG974 basically said what it really means. For me, its all about the power and invulnaribility of not being forced to a limit such as a salary, lifestyle and power. It is all about how you can deal with it when power is first given to you. If you can fair well in the presence of power, then there is hope for you in the business world. Its all about the ****ing power....and how well you can play fortune teller.

exactly, so monetary gains aren't the ONLY thing driving business people, just like futurenyu wouldn't do it because he hates it... (i love science, i just don't enjoy looking in people's mouths)

That's exactly correct frosty. I'm doing business because I like business. I like financial markets. I like numbers. They make sense to me. I like analysing stocks and all the finance stuff makes sense. The money, well that's an added bonus, but it weighs about equally to how much I love business.

Money's important, but if I'm not happy with my career, I won't be able to enjoy that money. Yes, one could make the argument that as an investment banking analyst, I won't be able to spend the money I make. But if I go into medicine because I'm afraid to work 90hrs/wk (which I am NOT), I won't be happy with my job, and therefore my life will be miserable, rendering me unable to enjoy the money anyway (and this is a worse dilemma than having money and no time to spend it because you're just depressed).
